Hey, here it is, my list of things I have and things I will have very soon. How much horsepower do you all think I will be around?? I already have these parts:
Head port and polish
Intake manifold port and polish
60mm throttle body
1mm OS stainless valves
Crower stage 2 cams
crower titanium retainers and springs
AFX UDP
ARP Headstuds
magnaflow catback exhaust
AFX Race ECU

Here's the rest that I am getting in 1 month:
Star Stage 2 kit (do you all think I should just piece a kit together or just buy the atar kit?)
8.8:1 JE pistons
Eagle H-beam long rod kit
Melling oil pump
crank scraper
retro limited slip
ARp Mainstuds
Spec stage 3 or 4 havn't figured that one out yet

I think that's about it, any other suggestions??

What are you using for fuel? I was at around 300whp wiht basically the same exact setup.

best time so far 14.3 @ 101.1mph(no traction)

Well, I was told over in the turbo forums that I should scrap the fmu in the turbo kit and use a SFMU, I was looking at the Votech one. As for injectors, I'm not sure yet, what do you think 440's? or are they too big? And a Walbro 255 comes with the kit
Do you think I should just piece my own turbo kit together? Or just buy the star?

This is a good idea. The Vortech is the norm for boosted 420As not running MS.

Not hardly. You should find Corbin's website with the search and check out his formulas for injector sizing. They will give you a good idea where you want to be. Going too big on a kit without the MS can give you sisues during idle and boost transition, but you'll learn all about that in no time.

Just follow the path that's tried and true for now. 440's are fine and get your SFMU. Don't worry about that MS accronym. ;)

Are you insistant on the Star kit if you must get one? Check over at Hahn(www.hahnracecraft.com), not only do they sell kits, they tell you everything they include with their different stages(for the most part). You probably already knew this, but if you can't decide, it never hurts to check with a company that's done this for many years. :)

Hey, do you guys think I should piece together my own kit, or is it a pain in the @$$?

you dont want to run the afx ecu with your turbo kit.

Okay, looks like I'm selling the Ecu, it's an AFX Full Race computer from Howell Automotive, I'm selling it for $410 shipped but the person buying it has to send me their ECU. The reason I'm going to sell it for $20 more is because I had to wait 5 DAMN months to recieve it. The wait was well woth it though, it's by far the best N/A mod you can do (well as far as installing it) I'll be posting this in the for sale forums too. Remember all, 1997 only, I don't want a 96 ECU mailed to me and the buuyer all pissed off.

keep the ECU and tune for it, mo power if you can tune it right.
youve got all the mods to support the higher rev limit,etc.. and you waited for it, use it.
Dont fear the afx ECU!! use it

Go with the star kit. more bang for buck just no Customer support. With Hahn's kit you will want to upgrade the turbo to a 20g if you want 15+ psi. I do recommend Hahn's IC though, staris kinda small but will work for a while, eventually you can upgrade the FMIC. Look into the 8 injector setup, much more reliable than the SFMU and very easy to work with. You can get an 8 inj setup for 500.00 used with everything you need.

pain in the ass, I did it before and ended up using mostly parts from hahn (turbo, mani, fmic, oil plumbing..) so it was just a Hahn stage 2 for a bit more of a headache and maybe $200 savings... I miss it though :(

So wait, keep the ECU? I have never had a turbo before, so It is pretty much new stuff to me. I have always been N/A. I know how a turbo works and all of that, (I'm not dumb) I built and do all of the work on my own car (with the help of all of you though). I really ever havn't dealt with tuning a turbo or the fuel or anything like that, do you all think it's worth it to me to try and get it tuned with it? Basically, is it that much harder to tune a turbo'd car with the AFX than without it? Thanks a lot for all of the help so far guys.

Depends on your level of involvement. If you plan on running lower boost levels then the AFX will be fine. The problem is that the AFX advances timing to a MUCH greater degree than the stocker (that's how it makes more HP on an NA car). This can be dangerous on a turbo car if you do not take that into account. You have the potential of making more power but the margin for error is smaller. It's up to you. In my humble opinion it's always best to start simple and learn from there, don't jump the gun the have your learning curve to great to get accustomed to and then blow the motor becuase of it.

Okay, let me also bring in another question along with the AFX. If I'm running 15lbs of boost on 8.8:1 comp. I'm gonna need an A/F gauge, a EGT gauge, Boost Gauge, any other gauges or things that would be something really really good to have? I'm not trying to spend a lot of money at this moment in time, but I know if I want everything to go right, I gotta fork out the cash, I'm just trying to get my priorities right. What would you all buy with what I am planning to do? Also, around 300whp, am I going to really be kicking myself in the @$$ for not getting an LSD, or will it be okay? THX

Just get it built and running. Focus on the key stuff for now do0d. Stop making this so difficult.

Oh yeah, don't flame me on this one, but it's just something I've never learned or thought about, If I am going turbo, does that mean I have to already have the turbo on my car so the motor can break in with the turbo?? Or can I break in the motor at 8.6:1 without the turbo and then turbo it a couple of months later??
84728, RE: 15 boost, crower 2's, 2.0 longrod block, stage 3 clutch
Posted by mcgyvr, Jan-13-05 05:33 AM
you can break it in without the turbo.

and IMO get it tuned at a dyno correctly.
its amazing what a little tuning can do.

IMO get the megasquirt or keep the afx ecu and get some way to retard ignition timing.

seriously a higher rev limit with the turbo would kick ass.
I wish I was manual.

Posted by powellds, Jan-13-05 05:35 AM
Ok, say I keep my AFX and go turbo, would I NEED the megasquirt? How much is it by the way? What would work good to retard the timing besides that? Or should I just buy the damn megasquirt? I'm only going to be running 15lbs. Oh yeah, I'm N/A right now and that AFX kicks ass, I'm reving to 8k right now, it's sweet.
