I work with an old man that was some electronics guru in the Navy. Well if you get him talking, he never seems to shut up but, today he flipped my light on.
He was talkin about pulling injectors out and using a 9 volt battery to hold the injectors open. Then he went on saying he gets aerosal cans of injector cleaner and can flush them out both ways till the injectors run clean.
Have you guys ever heard of this? What do you think? I have a set of 450's that I think Im gonna try it on.

Well, a 9 volt battery will still hold the injectors open for a 100% duty cycle. Fuel injectors aren't ment to run at a 100% duty cycle, they can overheat.
But, I bet you would be fine with a 9 volt battery holding it on there for a few seconds. Still, I doubt it's a good idea.
When you send your injectors out to a cleaning service they run the injectors at a duty cycle (I believe it's around 80-85%) while flowing cleaning fluid through them backwards.
Off topic, if you want 4 clean 450's, I have a set of them that have been cleaned and balanced, but I have not installed them.

how about getting yourself a rheostat or something like that to be able to cut down the power. that would allow you to hold open your injectors at a lower duty cycle...like mentioned above like the pros do

The amount of voltage going to the injector is not relative to the duty cycle.

That's a square wave. It also happens to be around 50% duty cycle because it seems to be on 50% of the type and off 50% of the time.
A 9 volt battery is "on" all the time, it does not switch.

The amount of current available from a 9v battery is not going to cause an injector to overheat to the point that it fails, especially when it's opening against zero load. Under a real load, i doubt a 9v battery would open it at all.
its not an ideal way to clean them, but it does work and it is a fairly common practice. Leave it to the EE to be overly concerned about the safety of the electromagnetic coil :-)

Yes. I seriously doubt you'd come anywhere near burning up the injector.

if you get paranoid about it put a momentary switch in the circuit and open and close it seconds at a time to simulate pulse width.

A weak 9v (anything lower than 8.9V) will barely open it if at all. Well atleast thats with the injector we run.
As for it opening under load, IT will for up to 600-800 rpm ( tach was dying). At about 60ish psi of fuel press. I had forgotten to hook it up to the cars 12v by accident so it ran off the 9v lol.
IM talking about the supermialage vehichle though, FI briggs lol.

I would think a person would want to be a little more sure of how what they were doing would affect the flow characteristics of the injectors. Sure, it's a neat little trick you might try to save your arse once if you really needed it, but I'd be a bit nervous you might end up with perhaps some particulate matter getting in there somehow. All it takes is one injector to fail to ruin your whole day. Besides, getting four injectors cleaned and balanced runs what, about $60 over there?

I wouldn't bother doing it yourself unless you were on an episode of Junkyard Wars and had to be done in 10 hrs. There is no guarantee of how well it will work and if it will equally affect all injectors. RC Engineering charges $24 per injector and they do a damn good job. They will pulse the injectors while cleaning and expose them to ultrasonic vibrations. They also examine the spray pattern on an individual basis. You end up with a set of injectors that flow exactly as much as they are supposed to and are balanced against each other (with a data sheet to prove it). I don't think you'll ever match that at home.

Well Im not running them on the car, so its not like Im gonna have down time on the car if it doesnt work. Its just the old man said he did it on the BMW and it was like night and day. So Im gonna give a whirl and see how it turns out. I have another good set just incase, lol.
