OK, I won't get into the details (and don't ask if you know what's good for ya!), but I ended up putting the wrong fluid in my manual tranny. I drove the car for literally 1/2 a mile like that, then put the stuff you are supposed to use in the car. (Texaco MTX, otherwise your synchros will disappear)

I used an extra quart (and it is expensive!) to "rinse" out the wrong stuff that was in there, and then filled it with the required amount (2 Liters) of the right fluid.

Now, the questions are, will I have to worry about having had the regular stuff in there (even though it was for 1/2 a mile or so)? Was using an extra quart to try to rinse out the old stuff a good idea? Will any of the "residue" of the fluid that was in there affect the tranny/synchros/life of the Texaco fluid?

what 'wrong fluid' did you put in there. i just replaced mine with BG sycroshift with no problems for 200+ miles

oh also i think as long as you had some lubrication in there and didnt drive it hard for that 1/2 mile i think you should be ok.

Todd... you know I'm gonna ask... What did you put in... and why?

Now on to your question. I think you'll be fine. it wasn't inthere long enough to do any damage or for any of the fluid to really be "absorbed" by the metal parts in the trans. As long as you did a good job of flushing out the wrong stuff.

Actually I would concider, if I were you, draining what's in there now and putting fresh stuff in after a week or so. Just to make sure you get the bad stuff out. I know it's expensive... but how much is replacing a trans again?

I've also heard that there are several other fluids you can run (BG, Mopar Pref. fluid, etc) that will perform just as well if not better than the stock Texaco MTX...

But buy it anyway. You'll be helping pay for my Dad's retirement, and my mom's half of his pension!

Alright, here's what happened. I took it to the shop down the street and had coolant and tranny fluid replaced. Well, when they asked which fluid needs to be used I gave them the part number for the MITSUBISHI manual tranny! Not the CHRYSLER one.

Well, it wasn't the shop's fault. I SPECIFICALLY told them to use the wrong fluid, and once I got it home I double checked and realised I used the wrong stuff. The shop I go to is a good shop, I messed up on this one.

The 1/2 mile from the shop to my house was done real easy. It sat in there for maybe 1 1/2 hours or so at the most.

I've had the wrong fluid in for nearly 2 yrs now. I figured if its gonna harm it the damage had been done a long time ago and would be a waste to change it. So my tranny wont get the "right" stuff until monday when the new clutch goes in (and it was the clutch not the tranny). Dont worry. Used trannies are cheap now a days, $500 and under. All I need is a reason to rationalize purchasing a quife :-). I did however manage to blow 2 trannys using the right fluid. Go figure.

I called up a Dodge dealership today. The service dept there has experiences with neons and avengers (same trannies as us, as you already know). They said as long as I put the right stuff in now, I've got nothing to worry about. (whew!)
