84168, Vortech FMU Posted by ericeclipse2, Dec-31-04 07:42 PM
I was just wandering if I can install a Vortech FMU inline with the stock fuel filter or in place of the stock FPR. I read the forum on installing a S-FMU. I was just wandering if there's an easier way. :shrug

Forget the Vortech, get the Aeromotive 1:1 :-). Vortech comes after the fuel rail on the return side, that being the schrader valve removed ofcourse. The the stock FPR has to be removed and plugged and you need to run a return line from the Vortech FMU all the way back to the tank. IN addition, I advice installing a fuel pressure gauge so when it's time to dyno tune you'll know the fuel pressure.

First off, the stock FPR DOES NOT get removed you dummy. And you dont HAVE to run a fuel line from the FMU ALL THE WAAAAAAY back to the tank dood. You simply mount the FMU by the Tank and then just run a long vacuum line to the engine bay. I use the FMU and none of your shit above is correct. The FMU still uses the stock FPR. And for installing a fuel pressure gauge, if he turbo'ing, that would be good common sense for that gauge.

Wait a minute, are talking about with an SFMU or the 1:1? Well in that matter both. Correct me where Im wrong but, with either, you have to get rid of the FPR or either wont work properly. This is how mine is setup and it works perfectly. As for the mounting goes, both of you are correct, hell you can mount under your seat if you want, lol.

He is asking about an FMU not a SFMU. there is a difference between the the two. with the fmu, you dont get rid of the stock fpr, you still use it.

Ah ok, well congratulations, this is the first thing I learned in the new year, lol. Well actually the second, first thing is, dont mix Yagermeister and Vodka, lol. Hella headache, lol.

TIP: mix yager and red bull ... youll have a bigger headache after about 6 shots!

Ok. So I can just mount the FMU under the rear seat, where the pump is and run a vacuum line back there. I've already bought the Vortech FMU, or I would have with something better, but I got a good deal on it. What lines do I connect to back there. And also, I have a A/F ratio gauge, do I need a fuel pressure gauge too?

First off, I would mount the FMU right back by the stock FPR (located just before the passeneger side rear tire, underneath the frame). This way, you arent running big lone fuel lines. I just drilled a hole back there and bolted it back there, its easy this way. Then you unhook the fuel hose going to the stock FPR and run that to the side of the FMU, and the run a new fuel hose from the bottom of the FMU to the stock FPR (where you took the first hose off). I might have those 2 backwards, i forget which way they go, lol, do a search for it here, its been discussed before. And then just run a vacuum line from the FMU up the intake manifold and either tee off a source for it and just go right into the back of the manifold. I just ran my vac line up the hard fuel lines under the car and tee'd into the TB vac hose. Thats an easy way I know of. Also, I am guessing that you are turbo? what size recal kit do you have in the FMU? If you are on stock internals, keep the 12:1 disk that comes in it, if you running on a built bottom end, i would suggest getting the 4:1 recal kit disk. And for your fuel pressure gauge question, I would get the following gauges to be safe when turbo'd: oil pressure, fuel pressure, boost/vac, air/fuel and EGT. Thats just my opinion, but I like to know all my readings, especially after spinning 2 rod bearings because of lack of oil pressure. WOW, thats way more than i wanted to type. Points please :) hehe! Anything else, just holla, i am one of the few out there although there are more than me, but that use the FMU while rebuilt instead of the SFMU.

i think i plugged my stock fpr and just ran the lines to the front for the fmu. hummmm. are u sure u cant run the fmu without the stock fpr? i think u can do both if i remember back when i was reading up on it before i installed it. i have an sfmu waiting to install but i think u do plug the stock one because the fmu raises the fuel pressure when in boost and i think the stock fpr will not be enough because it linits the pressure in the lines. is that right. i have the 97 so maybe it is different for the early years that have a return line.
might be wrong but i hope not might explain the issues with the car. i think corbin or kirby had an illustration write up on it along time ago.
oh well hope all had a good new year. im tryin to get over a head cold so i didnt get tooo drunk :)

not sure if you can run the fmu without running the stock fpr too. how would you run the line for the fmu that is supposed to go to the stock fpr then? the point of the fmu is help raise the fuel pressure under boost.

now i remember. you plug the return hole on the stock fpr and run the return line from the fmu to the return. still use the stock fpr, its been awhile since i hooked it up.. thanks for the refresher

Nope sorry, I disagree. The motor runs perfectly fine the way I explained in my post. Don't you remember, the FMU has a diaphram and it's boost dependant, the FMU takes over the FPR's job. Once it reads a positive manifold pressure it shuts off the return so the injectors won't thirst. Dude a 12:1 is way too rich, think about it for a second. 12:1, That's twelve pounds of fuel pressure per 1 psi of boost, c'mon now. So if he's going to run let say 10 PSI (respectively) that's equivalent to 120 psi of fuel pressure.
And in addition, it doesn't matter where you mount the freakin' FMU as long as it's getting a vacuum to open the return.
Lastly, don't ever assume that a person doesn't know what he is talking about.
Take Care
