84097, Finished pulling my motor apart. wuet. Posted by Blizare, Dec-30-04 10:41 AM
Found out that all the bearings are in good shape, along with the rods........so I beleive I am buying some forged 8.8:1 to mate with the con rod. I've searched and found a few people have had success with this and the OEM con rod is good for 3-400 hp.
All in all, it was fucking fun. the whole time. never had any major problems or anything so that probably helps with the fun factor.
Pulling the motor out was super fucking easy though. We had the car on the 2 posts hoist, undid the tops of the motor mounts and raised the car up. We pulled it with the tranny and the pass. side axle still attached. lol
So now I'm undecided about what to do.
I was banking on the pistons being O.K. for 7-9psi but it turns out they are scored pretty badly so dads says :nono I WAS planning on keeping this LOW BUDGET and low boost but now, with forged pistons, i can run higher boost. which means i need to spend MORE money on some things I wouldn't have had too running 7psi, ie:injectors, megasquirt, lsd, bigger turbo, FMIC, and that shit.
pfff. This is almost exactly what I didn't want to get myself into. a money pit.
Suggestions?

Save a moose ride a mounty......
I only know of one person on the board running stock rods and they held to 19psi. What the hell is another 250.00 for rods. besides it will cost you to have the factory rod machined and setup for a floating pins. while your there why not install arp bolts to take that weak link out of the picture. thats a lot of work for just stock rods. just do it right and spend the money now so your not doing it again later.

i think so too.

I really don't want to sink a bunch of money into this heavy ass POS ya know.
I love my baby. But i want to make a yellow S4 my baby next year so....
Back on topic.
So now, i'd be stupid to NOT utilize the forgies and run 15-18 psi or so right.
Here we go...

Terry where are you getting forged rods for that cheap? I'm running stock rods @11-13 psi and they seem to work fine for those boost levels. I got them machined for $6 per rod to fit my pistons but that price may not be what everyone can get in their area. Terry is correct, get the better rods, they are worth it in the long run.

2.4 with srt-4 internals IMO...I think it's just as cost effective. :shrug
look into having your rods shot peened (sp)

I just pulled my motor out yesterday, i am sending my block and getting a built block for $2400. I want more boost and the block to be able to handle it since i bought the bottom end kit before and the mechanic fucked everything up b/c it never ran right.

no i'm pretty damn good at wiring anything.
But I don't want a 2.4 swap imo.
I wanna use what I got. Cheap and effective. Also proven too.

the rods are 300.00 the cheapest i can find. you can get them cheaper on ebay but you gotta be patient. i was figuring 300.00 - hassels for machineing, shot peening, and checking straightness of the factory rods, arp bolts.

Save yourself the time and do it all at once. Better in the long run. May as well just run the low boost to be safe. It'll hurt you more when you cheap out and later on cost you even more time and money. :D

yeah i agree...i just put a hahn stage 2 on mine, with eagle rods and je pistons. its much easier to do it all at once and not have to worry about anything.

yea, but you guys are "PUTTING" a bunch of money into your cars. I'm going cheap so I can sell the car next year with a rebuilt motor and turbo.

you already have plans to sell it? why even waste the time and money if you plan on selling it afterwards? i don't get it.
edit- and down with "wuet." sounds like your grandma farting or something.

i hear you . But i'm only wasring 500 -1000 of MY money on it so it doesn't really bother me :shrug
thats just like buying a header and exhaust or some shitty mods.
i'm just not wasting my money on that shit first. :P

how on earth do u come up with only 1000 ? hell specially canadian. DO you have ANY idea how much new bottom end costs?? Try 1000 USD at least! Plus turbo plus megasquirt plus lsd.... and the list continues. Maybe you really have no idea what your talking about and need to just swap in another stock motor with low miles and boost 7 psi and just forget about the rebuild. I think your expectations of cost are very unrealistic. Please don't get defensive and whatnot. Im just handing you a very strong dose of reality. Money adds up quick when your doing a rebuild. You may only be thinking about certain parts but there are ALOT of other parts/labor(machining) to consider. Before you sink this money into the car, please realize you will get VERY LITTLE return on investment.

Gasket set, pistons, rings, machining, I would replace bearings while it's apart. $1,000 good luck. Because if your pistons are scored chances are so is the bore. So you need to overbore, hone, and machinging for rods, you should rebalance.
Somebody who's going to want to buy the car with a turbokit would probably prefer the engine have been built the right way and not patched.
You'd be better off dropping a boneyard engine in with lower mileage.

You're prety much going to lose every wooden nickle you throw at this project considering this goal. If I were you, I'd grab a boneyard engine like has been suggested, drop it back in with a couple of nice bolt ons the new owner will be able to justify spending a couple hundred more for (maybe some filled motor mounts or energy suspension bushings for a sportier feel with less power). THEN, rebuild your original engine the RIGHT way. If you can't sell, or decide you don't want to sell her in the end (still a Talon underneath it all ;) ) then you have a fresh, built engine to drop in over a weekend that will take all kinds of boost. And should you still sell the car? Well, you know plenty of people who are looking for a rebuilt 420A at a good price.
I think that's the most cost effective, reasonable to attract a buyer, and FUN way of doing things. Just my .02, eh.
