No. Quaife's cost that much for a reason and you don't drive a Honduh.

like mot of them guys said.. i wouldn't trust anything OBX in my tranny. That's why i went with the retrofit. It's better for the drag anyway.

I'd try it.

Not everything OBX is junk... I have the OBX underdrive pulley... and it's very nice. Works perfectly.

Something like the LSD is not something they would have taken to making lightly... And it does have a lifetime warranty... like the Quaife. Wouldn't surprise me if they were identical...
And bear in mind there is a Mopar LSD for the Neon... everyone calls it a Quaife... but maybe it's not. ;)

I'd try it... for the price you can't go wrong!

Maybe, maybe not. After hearing this (below) it would take ALOT of good reviews by people here for me to even think about it. That's some scary shit.

I am not an expert on Quaifes so don't give me any hard core technical questions. This is just my observations on my autopsy of the OBX clone.
The OBX came encased in a custom styrofoam packing inside the box. It was typical of Asian packaging and I liked how they did that

It was easy to tell the OBX from a Quaife from the outside of the unit. The finish on the Quaife exterior is smooth satin whereas the OBX is of a rough machining. It had sharp edges and was not deburred like the Quaife. (If you were to break your OBX, don't send it to Quaife. They would be able tell the diff immediately.)

Next I did a ghetto hardness test and ran a hack saw blade over the case. It marked the case telling me that it was only mildly heat treated compared to the harder Quaife.

There is eleven allen bolts and one pin holding the unit together (just like Quaife). On removing the bolts, I observed that some were loose but none of them were tight. I believe Quaife torques these bolts to 50 lbs where I would guess the average torque on the OBX was 10-15lbs. This would probably lead to tranny failure as soon as one of these bolts worked itself loose into the transmission. As I pulled apart the top of the OBX, there is a pressed in pin that also holds the top in alignment. The pin fell out of the OBX. A very poor fit. Also the bolts were of a slightly lower grade than Quaife's.

The internal design of the unit was identical to the Quaife. There is a bolt in the center of the unit that I removed. Tension on this bolt is held by several Bellview washers. These are cupped washers that work like springs to load the bolt. The goofy thing was these washers were installed backwards and were not even working. Amazing how they can copy something like this and not tell their 15 cents per day workers how to install these washers properly. By having these washers backwards, I'm really not positive how this would effect the working of the unit but would assume it has to do with loading one wheel or the other. Not sure.

Finally, I pulled all of the gears out of the unit. You can tell the quality of the machining of the gears was unfinished and rough. There was a huge amount of play in these gears, which is not good. They will be very noisey on the street and have the potential of banging together until they fail. I certainly would not try to run slicks with an OBX.

It will be interesting to see what Quaife will do about OBX. Quaife holds a world wide patent on the unit and the design is identical but just with poor tolerances and machine workmanship. I guess that is what you can expect, given the price of the OBX. I would guess if you have a 200whp street car, this unit will work for you. If you have a high horsepower car, I would stay away from it. I think a set of slicks and some traction will destroy the unit fairly quick. If you plan to buy one of these, have someone take it apart first just to check bolt torque and the Bellview washer orientation. It could live a much longer time by doing that.

I think ultimately we will see Quaife take some sort of legal action against vendors selling this product. I guess time will tell on that. I have decided not to sell the unit as I am not one for taking the heat...

Yah i know quaife quality is awesome

"If" we could buy them overseas we could get em cheaper...stupid quaife usa and their jacking up of the price..

OBX also seems to give their LSD a lifetime warranty..course it dosent cover their part slaughtering your trans.....

Im still partial to clutch type diferentials....no need for pre-loading to have some sorta transfer

I'd use it. Why? Because i think it could do the job and with a lifetime warranty, i could shred them all day long with free replacements for the one time, low low price for $375.

NV-T350's are cheap.

I own a Quaife and its awsome. I love it. You can tell its built with quility. I have seen many destroyed diffs in my day. I just recently removed a destroyed Diff out of a Military UpArmor Hummer. The quife just feels built proff.

well I bought one (Iam poor and on a peg leg right now so this looks like a big fat steak!) Iam currently making 530+ whp and the car went 10.8 with stock tranny and axles..
I will have it within the next week and have it installed (by me..remember Iam poor..lol) and have the car to test and tune on the 20th at famoso raceway in bakersfield.I used to always pre load the drivetrain to help keep axles in the car and not blow the diff..I will thrash on this thing as hard as I can and see what its good for. (I have 2 xtra sets of axles the only reason I was never hard on it before is due to fear of a tranny blowing..but I got a xtra tranny now so its balls out time!

wish me luck..I hope this thing holds and turns out to be something for the poor people to run without fear!

UPDATE
I got it in and it is a 1 year warranty but it looks pretty damn beefy so we will see..I also added some nitrous to the car aswell..so we will see if this fuucker will put up or scatter!

same guy who actually bought it post3 wrote:
kinda does a lil "skip" when I make a hard turn (like a U turn) at slow speeds..other than that is is pretty cool so far..nice to be able to gun it and have the car goes straight instead of all over the road..but its only seen 300 whp at this point..high boost comes on the 20th

same guy who actually bought it post4 wrote:
action 2MD clutch and 225/50/15 cheapy tires..24.5x8x13 M/T for the track.
belive me..I have been hot rodding the car for the last 24 hours..I have already went thru 10 gallons of 110 VP race gas!.............

I guess you just need to be GANGSTA..but mine seems to be working thus far..I even did a 8000 rpm launch on slicks in front of my house with the nitrous flowing today and it took it like a champ..Iam loving this cheap bastard so far!!.............

same guy who bought it post 5 wrote:
well somewhat of a update...
I was playing around last night on the street and had bad luck!!! I blew the teeth off of 3rd gear!!! (always seems me and 3rd dont get along!) well anyways..we pulled the tranny to find that 3rd was in like 5 pieces but the diff was unhurt!!!! so we dropped another 3rd gear in along with syncro and what I call the collar/slider and its back in action..I will swear by these OBX diffs now!!! if I can blow 3rd gear out of the tranny and the diff was unhurt..its good enough in my book!

will have pics if 3rd gear soon (whats left anyways..LMAO)

FYI..

track day for me is this friday..then we will see if it will take 600 whp (536 on turbo plus a 60 shot wet of nitrous) if it does Iam becoming a dealer for these things!!

finally this guy gets to the track wrote:
ok ok ok..its results time!!!!
I made 2 pass's tonight and both of which where on 28+psi of boost with the 50 shot from the nitrous flowing..I launched at 7K rpm off the 2 step and it took it like a man!! car went dead straight and hooked so good I was bogging at 7000 rpm!!!

off the 2step I was seeing 18 psi out of the hole and the nitrous would kick it at 43 mph (hondata set which is high 1st gear with a 9800 rpm rev limiter) so if any of you want to run one..I would not hestiate!! I love mine and it has been thru more punishment than I thought it could take..but it took it and we still drove home!!!!

BTW best run of the night was a 11.43 @ 144 mph!!!!! just need to learn to drive it with the NAWZ flowing..LOL

Now a later update from this guy...
guy who bought it and how he feels now wrote:
Iam running one (obx diff) on a 600 whp daily driven car and launch at 7500 rpm off a 2 step with 25 inch tall slicks and it is still going..and it makes no noise at all on the street..dunno..maybe a lil biased earl?
OH and to those who say "your not hard enough on it to break" I pull 1.6 60 foots and trap 135 mph..and its driven every day of the week..even to take the kids to school.

i'd give it a shot if they make one for the GST.

Right now its in Development/ launch should be soon from what i heard....

Its a option for those diehard Torsen diferential buffs

Still preffer Friction Based LSD....im biased OK?? :)

How bout someone retrofit something like an ARB locker for the nvt350 :) open on the street...locked on the track... the single best locker i would say to addapt to Street/drag strip cars

Fully locked front diferential = ownage (ask anyone who is a diehard offroader :) yeah detroit lockers are probably the best but ARB are the most convenient of all)

Only if I can manage to flip the car over the retaining wall and mow down some spectators and have the gas tank explode spraying the rest down with burning fuel and shrapnel. Now I really want a knock off LSD!

I know the Mopar LSD for the T850 is 1200-1300 MSRP. I would assume that would be the the ball park on the T350 unit. I'm not totally sure though.

If they make it for a neon, they make it for us. Pure and simple - same transaxle.

Will this fit directly into our transmission or would we have to do a neon tranny conversion for it to work? I know it may be a dumb question to some but i hardly know anything about the neon transmissions.

104969, OBX LSD is now a proven option!
Posted by rbryant, Jun-28-07 12:19 PM

Just wanted to let everyone know that the OBX LSD has had a few bugs worked out and is a viable option now.

It is holding up well for several Neon and turbododge guys that all share the same differential with the 420a tranny.

It does need to be torn down and inspected before use and can use some new bolts and belleville washers. OBX doesn't do the best machine work to say the least but it is easily clenaed up. It is a copy of the quaife unit that is over engineered. I believe that the fact that the design is so solid the cheaper materials aren't a problem.

I did a writeup on servicing it:

http://rbryant.freeshell.org/obx_washers

I have had a lot of contact with people using them since I sell the bolts and washers in order to support my car habbit. So far the failures have mostly been related to broken washers that have jammed up in the diff which is not a problem after the new washers are installed. They are only $32 shipped and the rebuild isn't hard so it isn't a big deal.

Either don't take my word for it look around neons.org or turbo-mopar.com or even honda-tech.com for reviews. They have proven to be a very good option for the money.

Just think for a little more than a Phantom-Slip you get a real LSD differential.

Cool I am sure you will be happy with the OBX once you service it. Be sure to look over the writeup it should cover things.

Please let people know what you think of the replacement bolts and washers!
