83739, Rebuilt, now it will not start

Thanks for all the help I got from the board and the search, I put the engine back myself after rebuilt. Now it will not start. The starter is turning it, but it never started until I drained the battery. I unpluged the fuel line at the rail and gas sprayed all over, so I guess I have fuel. I also checked for spark and I'm good. All my sensors and grounds are on, and I even checked my camshaft position sensor. Is there anything I should do, or forgot? The only thing I can think of is maybe the timing is off, the rebuilt shop are the one who set it. What do you guys think might be the problem?
I'm comfident that with your help I can make it work. Any suggestions are apreciated.

if your getting spark, and fuel. then i'd say the timing is off.

Anyone else? I don't have a timing lamp and I was assuming the rebuilt shop would know how set a timing. Would a low fuel tank cause it, not to start?

low fuel..no thats not it. check that you plugged in the square plug on the fuel injector harness. its tucked in there and can be easily overlooked.

I'm sure its on. I just read from the search though, that when starting after rebuilt, you should turn the engine a few time without the injector harness on, to have oil pumped into the block. Is that confirmed?

Heh, how low is your fuel? I thought I had enough fuel to start after my rebuild when the gauge was quite low. It wouldn't start and there was fuel in the rail after cranking a few times. I was baffled. In the hopes that maybe what remained of the low fuel was used to fill the fuel lines, I went and got 5 more gallons of fuel. After doing that she started up after a few cranks.
I'm not saying this is your problem, but check obvious things first.

Tony

Also: Not sure how far off your timing has to be off for it not to start. My timing was off by a tooth or more and she ran.

I'm going to put more fuel in it tomorow and try to start it. Do you guys have any tips on checking the timing? I only see a white mark on each gear and they do not align. Thanks for the suggestions, anything else I should be on the look out for?

How badly do they not align? You can't use a timing light on our engines. The timing is either on or off. If those white marks are misaligned by a tooth or more then the timing is not set correctly. Its easy to mess up the cam timing on this engine. There is a very strict procedure that you must follow to set it correctly. And even then, it seems that some people even mess that up.

Ask your guy if he followed this procedure to set the cam timing.

if you want to check and see if your cams are right. take off your valve cover, and see on the left hand side twards the sprockets. there is a hole half way through the cam . the hole should be on top.

The timing is definetly off. My problem is getting the cranckshaft to 1/2 notch before top dead center with the engine on. Correct me if i'm wrong but I would have to :
1) Take the passenger side mount, to get the timing belt cover out.
2) Take the belt out
3) Take udp out to see the TDC reference mark.
4) Align the camshaft to 1/2 notch before TDC
5) Align camshaft timing marks.
That seems like a big job just to get the alignment right on our car. I wonder if there is not an easier way to get the TDC without doing all that work? If you guys know any it would help a lot. thanks guys for all your help.

yes timing is a bitch on our cars. it took me and a buddy like 8 attempts to get it right on. and yes, you have to take all the belts off and the crank pulley off. it becomes a non-issue after doing it so many times.
