83701, 420A rebuild questions
Posted by killercamaro, Dec-21-04 01:18 PM
ok, obviously i'm new here. i am a sophomore at Central Missouri State University studying Automotive Technology. one project i have is overhauling an engine. i have chosen to rebuild the 420A in my sisters 97 Dodge Avenger. my question to you is this: are there any complete rebuild kits out there for a 420A? i have searched and come up with parts but no full kits. i am only looking to go back to stock with this so it doesnt need to be anything too radical. also, are there any quirks or oddities inherent to the 420A design i should know about beforehand?

thanks all!

Howell Automotive sells a stock rebuild kit for around $300 IIRC.

Oh yeah, and az2gnt.net/FSM/. :thumbsup

As long as you know where and the specific sealants to use on the 420a block, there is nothing really tricky about it (no balance shafts etc). The block is a 2 piece design (I am assuming you know that, but maybe not).

The Factory Service Manual can be found here.

Be advised, the Howell stock rebuild kit does not come with rods.
So keep your old ones if they are reusable.
