Can someone please tell me what the best way to launch a stock 98 RS (A/T) is? I got beat by a damn Mazda the other day cause i couldnt launch my car good. I thought the best way to launch it was by puttin in N and then revvin it up and goin to D and got wooped. Please help me.... Also, is there a way for me to beat a stock 99 Corolla (5 spd) in my stock 98 RS (A/T)? My friend's been talkin so much sh*t since he got his corolla, talkin bout he can beat me. I wanna take him on, but dont know how to launch the car.

The LAST thing you wanna do to your AT is to LAUNCH IT DOING THE NEUTRAL DROP. That's the fastest way to totally fuck up your any AT tranny. The best way to launch is to just hold the brakes, rev it up to about 3K, quickly let go of the brakes, then mash the gas.

yea I agree with RoboTechDSM, dont do that Nuteral shit, this is the way I launch my AT. First Make sure your OD is off, Put it in 1 (low Gear) Rev It up while power braking then let go of the brake and launch. Then as the RPMS' climb close to Red Line Put It in 2 and once that gets close to Redline Put it in D.... This still isnt good for the Tranny But I like. Just dont do it to Often and youll be fine It takes Practice to Get it down good so be patient...

I dunno if you noticed, but if you leave it in "L" the entire time, it will still shift into "2" and "D" automatically, meaning moving it up one gear when it reaches redline is pointless.

I've read on this board the best thing to do is to hold the brake tight, press the gas till about 3k with overdrive off in "L" gear and then launch, however I have also been told by other people to do all of the above, but hold it as close as possible to redline.

So which is it?

I have found that my A/T beats a ton of cars off of the line (manuals) but they usually catch up second or two later.

However, I have beaten a stick eclipse with i/h/e, same mods as me.

I've only done this(shift up from L) once and it did give me a good launch. But when I went to slow down it wouldn't downshift right and I had to completely stop the car cus it felt like I was gonna drop my tranny or something.
I've been scared to do it since...What'd I do wrong???

When you're slowing down and you drop your RPMs low enough, the auto tranny will downshift and since you're still in 1st gear it'll rev REALLY high. So if you do this, be sure to put it back in drive at the end of the race before you slow down. I would just push the lever to 2nd at 6000 RPMS and then to drive at 6000 RPMS. It's just as effective since you're accelerator's to the floor anyways. :)

OK, ill try this. Did it work good when u were stock? I wont be stock for long anymore, if everything goes as i hope it will. I will be getting a short ram intake wit the K&N cone shaped air charger thing, and a cat-back exhaust. These will be my first

TheEclipsedOne should put a wager on his SS versus your trashy auto.

I power brake (hold brake down and press gas) to about 2000 rpm, and then let go of the brake and mash the pedal. Anything higher than 2000 rpm and the car will start moving. I guess the brakes and torque converted can't hold a really high rpm...

PS When I launched I just revved to 2k and usually the best launches I would spin the wheels and get the RPMS up a little more and just take off.

I actually like the neutral drop at about 2500-3k, but it's not good for the tranny, so I don't do it anymore. You gotta be ahead of the game. Watch the other light go yellow, then hold brake and gas, rev up and release the brake. Should be good.

Hey man, im real sorry. Its just that i been gettin shit from my boy (wit the corolla) since i got my clipz, cause i got a A/T. I havent raced him cause im stock, and im Auto and he's 5-spd. I dont wanna give him anythin to talk about. I have noticed that after i launch my RPM's drop way low, as if the car choked or somethin. This is when i do the N drop to D. I dunno what happens. Im gonna try that power brake thing. I read about it. I just wanted to explain why i got off the way i did. Also i had a raelly shitty day today. I got 3 tickets. And i didnt do anything to get them either. The cop said i was goin 72 on a 45 mph zone, and it was rush hour too, tell me how the hell thats posible. Then he told me that i wasnt wearing my seatbelt, and my girl wasnt either. He said that cause he couldnt see it through the back window, i got dark ass windows, and the seatbelts are moved all the way down, and i also had ppl in the back. So of course that means he's not gonna see it, but then again, that doesnt mean that i wasnt wearing them.
