Has anyone ever heard of the interiors of blocks being polished or smoothed out for oil sheeting action? Someone i used to talk to who was very big into racing and pit work told me one time in F1 cars ect the interiors of blocks are smothed out or painted to improve the oil travel to the pan. Logically this makes sense but i havent been able to find any documentation on the net.

I know that for high revving V8's (small block chevy's for example) that while the block is stripped down, the valley beneath the intake is all deburred and smoothed for improved oil return. In high RPM applications (7k-9k+) the high volume oil pump bring oil to the top end before gravity could pull enough back down into the pan, causing the valley to become pooled with motor oil.

From the bottom side as well all casting webs and other imperfections would be ground down, de-stressed, and improved for oil return.

EDIT: Never heard of the application put to an inline 4 cylinder however.

i'm rebuilding my girls crx and took a look at her block just for shits and giggles, the interior is much smoother that ours....chris

I've seen spray on coatings that go on the walls of the block at about the same height as the crankshaft. It was supposed to help any oil that got slung up there to sheet back down quickly. I think it was called an oil shed coating. It could be put on the non-machined surfaces of the crankshaft too. People will sell you a coating for anything. The benefits of this seem very minimal.

exactly, oil shed coating. summit/jegs sells this. it makes the lower portion of the block slick as hell.

Thats exactly the stuff i was thinking of, just didnt know summit sells it.
