8266, Gonna get an exhaust system... help Posted by 97_ESi, Nov-27-01 07:13 AM
Alright I think I'm gonna try and get an exhaust system for Christmas.
What do you guys think of this:
Go down to a muffler shop and ask 'em too make a 2.5" cat-back exhaust with mandrel bend and put a dynomax muffler on it? I want some power increase and I know the 2.5" piping will decrease low end torque. Also what muffler should I get? I want one that will give me a nice low grumble but also be fairly loud?
I only got $350 bucks Canadian to spend so try and help a guy out :)
Thanks, Mike.

Actually that's kinda the set-up I'm going for with my Stage 1. I looked up a dynomax race muff I think 36"(nice and quiet) and was getting some mandrel bends from JCWhitney. Try to avoid letting the muff shop press-bending the rear section b/c it will be fairly restricted(trust me I know) I currently have a magnaflow w/ muffler-shop press bends and paid 250 US FYI.

Cool, hows the performance gain?? (did you have it before stage 1?)
Also how loud is it ?? I want something noticeably louder but not hella loud :)

yo cant go wrong with the 170$ (US) pacesetter. i used it for the tubes, and threw on a straight through muffler. it was too raspy, so i added a better resonator, and now im set. total cost
170 catback free muff (dont ask) 40 bux to weld on new muff 20 bux for new resonator 20 bux to weld in new resonator
total 250 US

I haven't had the money to put it together yet. If you're in no hurry I'll let you know what it sounds like and all that.

Actually I meant your other muffler that you have now, is it worth getting that one?

I have a Dynomax Cat-back exhaust sytem on my Neon. It sounds nice around town but at higher speeds it gets loud and tends to drone. I am going to add a resonator to the piping soon.
I didn't notice any loss in low end pull with the 2.5" piping.

I have a Greddy EVOlution exhaust cat back. I LOVE it. it is real quiet at an idle. At higher speeds you can hear it but it isn't nerve racking. about 3500 to 4000 in fifth gear you really notice it.

if i were you... I would invest in a CAI before igot an exhaust... i would get a muffler tip and headers... not that bad
40 bucks off ebay for intake 100 bucks for muffler 135 bucks for pacesetter headers... in all your car will sound better and it will add about 30 horses just for 275... i would do it now but i dont have money i need the money for a newer eclipse a GST or something i have an intake and it helps out ALOT

uhh, yeah. i had to scroll down a bit, but it was on there. i got it from summit racin.com though.
the only reason i have the 5zigen is cuz i got it a weird way for free. i was definately planning on switching the muffs anyways, but that one showed up at my door, so thats how i went.
if your on aim, hit me up. vegasdsmr if not, post away and ill be back

8279, RE: Gonna get an exhaust system... help Posted by PowerEclipses, Nov-29-01 11:04 PM
127 what? intake 10 or so... headers maybe 5-7 and exhaust about 5-7so about 20-24

headers don't add all that much power you'll get more from the catback with a straight through muff. butt if your lookin to buy something i think the AFX underdrive pulley would be a better place to start than exhaust. more bang for the buck plus you can get your timing belt changed if it needs to be done

AEM isn't an option. There ain't no way I'm paying $300+ bucks (canadian) for their cold air intake.
