have you guys heard of gas porting the pistons? a buddy of mine was telling me about it today and i figured i'd run it over the boards. i searched and nothing found there. anyway, if you drill small holes down through the top of the piston, down into the inner edge of the ringlands, it will apply pressure to the rings in the outward direction and seal them better. sound interesting for the 2.4 swaps because most of us are re-using a block with some miles on it until the .020 over je's come out. he told me he used to do this on his go carts back in the day. also, he was telling me about a way to guard against "detonation". you can bore out the very top of the cylinder wall and press in a brass ring. i didn't get a chance to ask him why this works but he knows for a fact that it does. gimme some feedback fellas...chris

I almost bought a head from someone here that had that done. HIs car was tits though, so he might have benfitted from it. I haven't heard anyone else doing it around here. :shrug

i might be able to explain why the brass ring could help since brass is basically copper, which has a very low thermal resistivity, it could transport combusion chamber heat into the piston to be cooled by oil squirters

Gas porting pistons is drilling through the top of the piston down to the first ring land. The idea is that combustion pressure forces the top ring into the cylinder wall, creating a better seal.
This is often done in nitrous drag racing motors.
Benefits on the street would be minimal and not lasting; given that carbon build would plug the holes(negating the effect), and get behind the rings making them stick.
