I cant seem to get the "crank gear" off the crank. I am talking about the the "gear" that the timing belt wraps around and is used to set TDC. I need it off to remove and replace the oil pump. Is there a specific way to get this thing off without causing damage? I was thinking of somehow using the pulley puller on it, but the edges are just so small and I don't think I can get a good hold on it.

search around a bit. you need a 3 arm puller. im pretty sure the 3 ton model at autozone will do just fine

No- the 3 arm puller is for the crank PULLEY.

He's asking about the crank SPROCKET.

To get the sprocket off, you'll need a 3-bolt harmonic dampener puller, and three super long bolts, something like 120mm x 6mm x 1.0

Its a royal pain in the ass.

Hey man, I took my crank gear off just the other day. What I did was I just took three of the oil pan bolts and screwed them into the threaded holes on the gear(even though they don't go out past the crank, they still work). Then I took my three jaw puller that I used on the dampener and hooked the jaw ends on the bolt heads and pulled it off pretty easily. You just need someone else to hold the puller so the crank doesn't turn on you, but it worked out good for me :thumbsup

Make sure to use the right kind of puller...the metal edges on this is very brittle so i would discourage anyone from using a 3 tooth puller...use the one with 6mm screws...only right way to do it i broke mine...but got a new one they are cheap like 10 bux from fenton

Just a little tip. When you do get that off, think of a way to put it back because you are going to be hammering the shit out of it when you put it back. Get a cylinder big enough so you can get it flush on the gear itslef and hammer it in.

Get the UDP puller, a couple sets of washers (as in a smaller one on top of a larger one at each point), and three bolts to thread into the sprocket. They are metric, probably the size Dan mentioned above. I can never remember. We have a half a dozen sets sitting around down here in the Phoenix area that no one ever remembers to bring to a rebuild, so we have to buy a new set every time. Put the metric bolts through the arms of the UDP puller and washers, and then crank it off like the UDP. You'll need a long bolt to stick in the center (doesn't have to thread) for the main to push against without also pushing on the sprocket itself.

When putting it on, we've never used anything other than a 34mm socket and a copper mallet named "Thor." Have fun with it. It's one of the hardest parts of the tear down man.
