82009, New side exit exhaust done. Pics. Posted by MetalJim, Oct-21-04 03:58 PM
I finally finished my side exit exhaust tonight. I've been planning to make this thing for the longest time. I like it. It hums when you go down the road and sounds racey when you whomp on it. I guess it'll quiet down a bit once I take the Bosal off and put the turbo on. We'll see.
My first attempt was just to use one glasspack - Flowtech Red Hots 2.5" diameter, 18" core, 24" overall. It didn't quiet it down enough. I'm using a high flow catalytic converter and my mistake was that the cat doesn't quiet things down at as much as I though it was going to.

So i ordered another glasspack. The new one is a Summit glasspack 2.5" diameter, 14" core, 18" overall. This was the ticket...at least for my tastes. It makes it sound obnoxious but not deafaning.

I put it in the garage after the test run to let it idle a bit so I could check for leaks and whatnot. When I went upstairs my wife said "You rattled the windows". }( Oh, it looks pretty cool on the car too.

I've only been running the side exhaust now for a few days but no scraping yet. Theres about 4 inches of clearance from the bottom of the 2.5" diameter pipe. Thats with a stock ride height too. It may become an issue. I figure that if it does become an issue then I'll just run one, possibly two oval pipes for the tip.

if you were low at all you wouldn't be able to have that exhaust like that.
youd go over a speed bump and rip it off. its cool i suppose, but just don't make sense for a practical application.

wow MJ, that's tight. Just don't be getting CO poisoning on us. If you feel faint and look flushed, get outta the damn car and breath some fresh air!
I don't know how you can put up with the noise though. I swear this car is giving me tinnitus with a regular magnaflow

Thanks guys.
I have a perfect spot for testing the speed bump clearance. My brother in law has a nasty one in his development. I'll take a ride over there today and see how it handles it.
As far as the support is concerned, I guess the first point of support is on the cat. I have a high flow cat and what I did was weld a couple of j hooks on the sides so it mounts to the factory rubber on each side. For the catback I installed 2 universal hangers. Theres one at the bend and one at the end. For the one at the bend I removed the holy part of the universal bracket entirely and drilled the hole in the rubber big enough so it fits on the factory hook. For the one at the end I attached the bracket on the inside of the body right where the tailpipe exits. Heres a pic of the bracket locations.
