81895, Rebuilt and sounds good, but no power. Posted by powellds, Oct-18-04 04:33 PM
Hey, I just got done rebuilding my car with, Crower 2's, OBX adjustable cam gears, SBI rockers and Lashers, Crower springs and retainers, Rev Standars sized valves, AFX Underdrive Pulley, and a ported and polished head. I ran the car for 40 minutes to break in the cams at high adle and then took it for a ride, I wasn't hard on it and know I need to break it in. There's just no power, It seems like it's almost slower than before I did all of this. Anyone have any ideas as to what the hell's up? Or do I have to wait for it all to break in before the power start to come? I don't know and any help would be appreciated.

Stock compression?
Those cams will make power up top. Down low, it's gonna feel slow. break it in, then try redline a few times. You'll like it.

Also, I'm getting a CEL 12, it's for the AIC, the sensor is connected, but it still comes up, any suggestions?

Also, I can't get the damn car to idle, Probably because of the iac right? Does anyone know what the car would sound like or run like if the timing was off? Just checking

12 is not the IAC.
It's probably not idling because the cams are not properly indexed. How are your cam gears adjusted, and which gears are they?

They are obx and they are at stock setting, sorry, the error coed is 25 AIC something.

yeah, 25 is idle air, or target idle not reached.
Retard the intake cam a little and see if the idle improves.. that takes some of the overlap out. Leave the exhaust cam alone.

Okay, I'm taking my car to the dino shop on Friday, do they tune the cam gears themselves? Or do I have to do it? Because if they do it, I'll just leave it alone until Friday. Oh, two other things before I forget, if the cams are adjusted, will that fix my CEL? And how many miles do I have to break the car in before I can start going into the higher rpms? Thanks for all the help man.

Uh... What, I didn't think the questions were that complex were they?

Sounds like you're not done breaking in the motor. What are you doing going to a dyno? You're going to hear some minor conflicting opinions on how to break in a motor but bringing it to a dyno is not one of them I would think.

Well, I'm going to just drive the car around for about 500 miles, isn't that plenty to just break in the top end? Also, I need to tune my cam gears and don't know how. My idle is rough and the CEL 25 IAC is coming up and I think it's because my car isn't tuned right. any suggestions? Let me know guys, I really need to figure this out. Thanks for all of the help so far though.

Come on, someone has to know. I just got done taking a drive and the car seems to idle a little better, but can anyone help me with my other questions?

Well Ive read this post and I do agree with alot of it. So check it out: 1) When you built the motor you needed to degree the cams in to spec. This will get you complete performace from the cams. Other wise if you cant do that then all you can do is put them in straight up.
2) Yes you broke the cams in properly it sounds but you still need to break the motor in. How to break in the motor YES you will hear alot of suggestions but it still all depends on the rings you used on how long it will take for them to seat in.
3) Alot of your problems will go away once your cams are degreed in properly but if you still get the CEL try cleaning the sensors and make sure everything looks good. Plugged in no vac. leaks and so on.
4) As for the dyno tuning well if you have all the above done then all you need to do is use a wideband O2 and digital read out to see what your Air/Fuel is like and adjust from there. May need to get a SAFC or something similar.
Well thats my $0.02
Hope it helped also if it does and the car goes to the dyno I would like to know what gains you received.

Hi, thanks for all of the input. I didn't do anything to the bottom end though, just the top end. The bottom is stock and looks to be in near perfect condition. So, do you think the cams are broken in completley? Also, which way do I degree the cam gears? Which way is plus or minus? So I should retard the intake cam for the Crower 2's? Or advance? Also, do I need to do anything with the exhaust cam? Let me know. Thanks.

Shit, I went out to look things over right? Well, the damn timing belt is way too loose for some reason, I don't know why. I put it on and tensioned it right, carnked it over twice and the marks still lined up fine and the tension was fine. I don't get it. This just pisses me off. I'm going out to rip into the damn thing again and see if I can figure out if the tensioner is bad or something else.
