81644, Still not starting, still no gas or spark! Posted by ughhhead, Oct-12-04 02:01 PM
Well i still haven't gotten my car to start! I just got my 96 mtx ecu in the mail today and that didn't do a thing. I replaced the crank sensor, cam position sensor, ecu, and relays. I get cel 42 which is my mfi relay but it blinks 42 twice. i am still a big BANME! when it comes to using a multimeter and i need to use it to test some of my wires. I've come to the conclusion that i've definitly got an electrical problem. my wires are not melted to the egr tube. i don't have a clue what's wrong. I need to know what to test so that i know what's wrong. is it possible that the plugs would be bad? is there anyway to hard wire those relays? please help me!

So, how do you know you're not getting fuel? Spark?
Pull the rear seat and listen for the fuel pump priming when you turn the key to the "ON" position (if you haven't already). If you hear it, then you have fuel imo.
You can also ohm out your terminals on the coil pack with your meter. You unplug it and test for certain readinds across different points and pins. Chilton's tells you how. I don't think you want to try to check the volts being fired. Might be too much for your meter to handle. Dunno about that one.
Otherwise, good luck Ugh. :shrug

thanks for the reply man, i appreciate it, but check this out... http://forums.2gnt.com/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=5&topic_id=81467&mesg_id=81467&page=
see if you can come up with anything after reading that :shrug

i'm gonna try by passing most of the wires and hard wire the relay plug and see if that does anything.

Plugs could be bad, but check your coil pack too. Could be that. Check your plugs at night in a dark spot. Pull one at a time and turn the key, have someone see if they get spark.

OK, the MFI relay gets energised when the PCM detects that the motor is turning... which it detects by reading the Crank Position Sensor.
So you should start by checking that.
The reason you have no spark or fuel is because the power for all these is supplied by the MFI relay aka the ASD relay.
The ASD relay is on the bulkhead of the engine bay in the corner closest the driver. You'll see 2 or 3 relays there. If there are 2 relays, the ASD relay is the one on the right, if there are 3 relays, then ASD relay will be the one in the middle...
Start by checking the relay.

Ok, I am gonna jump into this thread cause I am having the same problem with my 97 that I just dropped and engine into last weekend.
I have tried 2 diff coils, both of which are known to work. New plugs wires. I pulled the ASD relay as well and swapped it with another one. Still no spark. I CAN hear the fuel pump prime, so I dont think that fuel is the problem.
What else should I/we check for?

95greenhrcgs, it sounds like the exact same problem. i changed my crank sensor, cam position sensor, ecu and both relays. none of the above worked. so i'm thinking i'm going to trace all 4 wires coming from the relay and bypass most of the wiring harness and see if i have a break in the wire somewhere through out the wiring harness.

OK. At this point I has swapped out/and or replaced the following parts with known working parts:
Coilpack/and plug ( 95 & 97 ) New wires New battery New starter Camshaft position sensor Injector harness and injectors
-Timing seems fine according to how gears are. -ECU gets power ( I can hear it humming when the key is in the ON position. -I am getting fuel at the rail. ( Checked the test port )
What should I do next? Swap out the Crank sensor with a known working one?
Any help will be appreciated!
Thanks again Jonathan

i dont know if you guys are ghetto like me, but what i did is take out one sparkplug attached to the spark plug wire, leave the others as is, and set the plug on a ground have a friend crank it. see if it sparks. just an idea.....

i know this may be a longshot but i had the same issue after my first rebuild. i had forgotten to connect the ground on the starter. check all your grounding cables. my 2 cents, hope it helps ya...chris
