81537, 60k Service question
Posted by 420A-Turbo, Oct-10-04 10:03 AM
My car is approaching the 60k serivce very soon and I wanted to know how much (if any) of a 'margin of safety' is built in to go past 60k. In other words, is my belt going to fail at 61k or is there no way to tell? This is my DD and I put a good amount of use into it(miles), and I dont know when I can either get the parts for this or get it in to be done. Also, how difficult is the TB replacement on our cars? I have the 420A overhaul factory manual, and I have done timing belt work on other cars before, but all have been RWD so it was much more straightforward. Anyway, if anyone has some input on this that would be great.

Your belt doesn't have a count down timer built into it but why fuck around with something like that? Spend a weekend and the cost of timing belt or stare dead ahead into the price of a full head rebuild. Your choice man.

werd to that. tb replacement isnt all that bad, just do it right, and use the right tools (i know this from experience)

I know that it wont go RIGHT at 60k, but I dont want to push it, just wanted some opinions, since I dont want a rebuild on my hands. I was thinking of taking it in to the dealer acutally, but I really dont want to do that if I can avoid it. I will probly break 60k this week though, and I dont know if I will be able to have the belt and get the change out done next weekend. What specific tools will I need besides basic hand tools, I searched and some people were talking about a DOHC cam lock tool that keeps the cams from turning while the belt is off, do I need that or can i just mark them and keep the marks lined up?

No one is saying that your T-Belt has a 60K ticker on it...that's just what the service manual recommends and the aftermath of a snapped timing belt is not fun, pretty or cheap.

Don't. You're looking at around a grand if not more.

Unless your belt has obvious damage you'll be fine for a bit but don't put it on your indefinate back burner.

As far as related info, do an advanced search for "timing belt" in subject line only and you'll get ALOT of results and it helped me alot during my ½ ass timing belt change. The Cam lock tool is your run of the mill clamp.

My car's getting to the 120k mark and I guess its time for its 2nd belt, also I never replaced the water pump at 60k so I figure I'd get that done as well. It's also my daily driver so I really can't be without the car for long so I went to satan and they quoted me 650 for both waterpump and belt, inluding labor. I know it cost me more than that JUST for the timing belt replacement at 60k...so I guess 650 for both things including labor aint that bad? or should I still shop around elsewhere and probably get beter price?

Whoa! I remember you. Didn't you used to have the Danzig sticker on the front of your car?

Damn man. long time no see. Old School members comin out of the woodwork these days...

$650 with parts and labor isn't a bad price. I'd still shop around, though.

Yeah, Im still shopping around, just wanted to get an idea on how much it usually runs for, so I guess that price's about right. I'll probably get it done in the next few weeks/month.
Thanx!

Just my input here... My Idler pulley went at 45k.
