81395, List the positives and negatives of the EGR system.

ive had it removed and i now have it hooked back up. but when i think about what it does i dont really want all that junk in my motor from it. is there any + to having the EGR hooked up besides it reducing the pollution of the car? performance wise is it better to keep off?

its a 97 RS .

The EGR recirculates exhaust gases back into the intake. Think about it, do you really want that dirty air being recirculated back into your clean air? Especially if you have a ported intake manifold?

I know I've posted some benefits of the EGR system in detail. To keep it very brief, recirculating exhaust gas during part load can improve fuel economy and reduce the tendency to knock. The EGR only runs at part load. Personally, I've removed it because I'm sick of the crap stuck to the back of the throttle plate. It also freed up some space for other stuff.

A lot of people get sickl of the crap that melts to the tube. I think THAT residue is far worse than the residue on the back of the butterfly plate. Especially when the residue is the insulation of important wires that is suddenly grounded when it should not be.

Well, that is what happens when you don't tie your wires down properly :P heh heh

Anyway, the EGR does reduce combustion chamber temperatures at part throttle. This is how it helps prevent NOx creation, which happens when the combustion chamber temp is too high. When a car is a part throttle the computer runs it a bit on the lean side for fuel economy, so some NOx is created. The EGR sends some dead air (no O2 in the air) into the combustion chamber which will not help combustion, keeping the combustion temps down.

As stated above the fuel economy is also improved a small amount by this, and knock at part throttle is reduced some too, but I don't remember why this is so for both cases (maybe I'll remember tomorrow).
The EGR stays closed at wide open throttle.

Unless you are going in for an emissions check, and you don't mind the check engine light, there should be no major detrement to leaving it blocked (or removed entirely). You'll have a little bit worse fuel economy (probably not by a significant amount) and you'll put out a little more NOX (oh no, the world is going to end...) but besides that, no big deal.


Now, an interesting point, some variable valve timing cars don't have EGR setups. The car's computer at part throttle just increases the overlap of the valve timing so much that some exhaust gas just doesn't leave the chamber and that has the same effect as a non variable valve timing engine with an EGR setup, but without the gummed up intake manifold and throttle body.
