Ive searched alot about toluene on this site and many others, and was just curious if it would be ok to try on my basicly stock 420a that had around 100,000 mi. This would just be used to try and not to continualy use, and i would only use around 10-15% toluene. With my stock motor would i be able to see any noticable gains with it.

Toluene increases octane rating and reduces the gas' potential for detonation.

A stock 420A has no need for that. A stock 420A's timing map really doesn't take advantage of 92 octane, let alone higher.

You "should" make the most power on the lowest octane you can run without knocking. Depending on the gas' burn characteristics, etc.

higher octane does NOT increase hp. It raises the threshhold of detonation, allowing you to (if you have boost, or a high compressiont setup) make more power safely.

If you're looking for a cheap way to get your car to go faster, get a wideband and make a fuel cut defender. FCD's on N/A's are nice because you can put in correction like an AFC, but only at 100% throttle. The trick is clamping the MAP voltage to a value slightly lower than 4.5 volts. I clamped mine to around 4.35-4.40 volts once and I picked up about 2 degrees of timing advance.

Then, adding xylene or tolune would help.

I personally like the idea of running an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and upping the fuel pressure. Then, using an sAFC or something similar, dial out the extra fuel. Poof. Free timing. The same could be accomplished with larger injectors, too, I guess.

Running 92 octane, I would be very surprised if an extra 2 degrees would need more octane. Especially since the AFX ECU adds something like 7 degree I think.

And, actually, toluene has LESS energy/calories/BTUs/whatever units you want to use than gasoline (which is mostly n-heptane and isooctane) so adding too much would actually cost you power since when it burns it doesn't release as much energy. (can you tell I'm a chemist??? :) )

It does help reduce knock (tendency towards detonation) but for your engine/tuning/mods it is not needed.

Well, yeah. The 2 degree thing was just an example. I'm sure you could lean it out even more and get even more timing if you clamped it to a different value. That's where getting an adjustable regulator or enlarging the injectors to keep some of that fuel would be nice.
