 973+0300 NTK O.E. Replacement., 2.0L(MPI) Mdls. $41.17 973+0333 NTK Rear O.E. Replacement., 2.0L(MPI) Mdls. $60.44
These are the cheapies you get from NOPI that work for our cars, what is the deal?, is there a different rear 02 than the front?
I was under the assumption they were both the same.

they are different. the front sends signals from the manifold and the rear send signals after the cats to let the ecu know the cat is there.....(downstrem one is always lazy imo) don't replace that one.
do the front

I understand the physical location is different, but I am wandering if you can use a front o2 for the rear, just splice it, and be done with it, or if it wont read right.
And btw, I dont have a rear o2, that's why I was looking into it... Since I am going to use the stock ecu for awhile with bill's fuel setup, I figure I should get rid of some of the CEL's that could effect stuff.

Just do the resistor mod Brad. there is a topic on it in one of the fourms right now. That way you don't have to buy one...

Can you do the resistor mod without having an 02 sensor? hehe.. I think it might still be tied up under the car, but its not in the exhaust because i didnt have a bung welded in, and i doubt it is any good, probably broken for sure.
And if anyone knows if you can use a front o2 in the rear and it work fine, let me know...

In order to do the resistor mod you must have the 02 hooked up and installed.....kirby go sit in the corner

No you dont. you just need to plug the hole. You dont need the o2 sensor though.

Well, since no one knows if I can hook a front o2 sensor up in the rear, I will just do it, heh... 4 wire's so ehh.. works for me.. I have a spare one laying around so thats why I started the topic... didnt want to buy a rear one if the spare front will do the job.

Interresting would love to see one at the next shootout or if anyone has one at the chicago meets. The 97+ ecu needs to see a cycling rear O2. Diagnostic scanners define the conditions met that cause this code so i know its not just one sensor that went bad on mine. if the o2 is out and resistor mod done it should not cycle at all since its sitting in free air.
If anyone has one in chicagoland area and can make it to the next meet oct 9th i would love to see it and how it works on the scanner menu.
As for putting the front in the rear.....no idea they are different but i dont know how....try it, worst it could do is throw a code i guess.

Come on now Terry, The corner is a rough place to be bro... If you are putting the resistor in there to "fake" the readings to the ECU then why would it matter which sensor it was? As long as it sends out a similer voltage then you can still use the resistor mod. Since I have not done this mod myself, I would not know if it's possible to do without the sensor, but if you change the type of resistor then you could do it with nothing but a 12v source and a relay. Also in a later post brad makes reference to the fact that he does still have the 02 sensor, which will prolly still function to spite the fact that it has been tied up.

Rough place...lol yes it is.
Your other point...exactly! its still there but on a 97+ such as mine! The ecu looks for a constant lean then to rich cycle rate. If you take out the sensor from the pipe it should read lean theoretically all the time. Now i got a code when mine went bad stating downstream o2 not cycling. When i looked at the data menu the o2 was just reading lean only. I had to replace it.
So.... If you pull the sensor and tie it up it should read the value of air, which i would think naturally is constant lean. Putting a resistor in would only lead the ECU to see more lean values. Now the code will pop up anyway. I dont know about a 95/96. but the 97 will look for a cycle rate. As for using the front sensor in the rear...you are prolly right it should work, if not its a matter of measuring the right resistor to mae it work.
There is no harm in trying which is why i would like to see someone make a go of it.

Are any of you guys running a cat or testpipe with worrying about the rear o2 sensor cycling?
|
80960, RE: NTK o2 Sensors Front/Rear Posted by Star Turbo Talon, Sep-24-04 06:20 AM
If you run a test pipe the o2 will cycle if installed in the exhaust. You o2 count is never stable. The reason you do the resistor mod is make the ecu think the mixture is leaner than it is. Once the cat is removed the fuel mixture is the same as it is for the front o2. The ecu looks for the rear o2 to have a leaner measure than the front o2...hence the reason for the resistor.

So therefore he will have a cycle rate anyway correct? Now I'm not to sure if I was answering the right question or not... :shrug I still don't think I belong in the corner though...lol

i think he said he's just gonna hook up the spare front sensor he had lying around and do the resistor mod. he mentioned there's no bung for a rear sensor so i'd imagine he's not planning on installing one just to get rid of a code...
