My friend has a 99 OZ edition.....he bought it with like 60k for like 8k....he bought it knowing the engine light was on....the car ran pretty good....after changing plugs and plug wires he can't figure out whats wrong with it....the car will sputter under 2k without hardly any load....just taking off like normal it will sputter if he doesn't keep the RPMs up.....also if he just goes to rev real quick it will sputter before really reving up....What do u think his problem is???

My car used to do this also. But the check engine light never came on, and it didnt happen very frequently. Only when I would start it after its been off for a long time. Like after school.
I would usually start the car up 5 minutes before I leave so it can warm up. It would start up fine, once my frined asked me ro rev it, and when I did... it sputtered a little bit. I let off and did it again... it sputtered again but less. And I did it once more and it cleared up. And revved normal after that.
But I have yet to have my check engine light come on.
Like I said, it only happens when the car has been off for about a day.
I have this feeling that it could be somthing with the exhuast system... but I'm not too sure. (mabey the cat?)

Just another thought...he gapped the plugs before he put them in right? He should pull them and re-check the gap. Also check for vacume leaks.

extreme bad cat con can cause this also, but also check your valve cover check valve. It's an inline check valve from the vc to intake mani.

Even if the light goes off it will store the codes. Take it to autozone and have the codes read and you will have a better idea.

if the CEL flashes while the car is on, then that means that you have a misfire

If the CEL is on, or has been on recently, check the codes with a scanner. The car is trying to tell you what's wrong, why not use that information?
Tell us the codes and we'll tell you what's wrong.

I pretty sure he took it to autozone right after he bought it and it had a misfire cel.....he had oil in the plug wells then changed the valve cover gasket cuz he thought that was the problem but it wasn't.....either was the plugs and plug wires.......

heh, I brought my dad's jetta to autozone to read one of his codes.... catalyst below threshold, bank1.
that's why I like my car... Keydance works good enough for me... but knowing exactly what is wrong is better...
I still have no idea what "bank" is.... Maybe i'm just retarded...DURRRRRR (sorry, cartman from southpark always pops into my head with that one).
Mine did that before but I never got a code... I replaced (in this order) plugs, nope... coil and wires and plugs (all at same time) fixed for about a year... then replaced plugs again... all good

Sounds like a rich misfire to me. The sputtering on startup and at low RPM's, all indicative of a rich condition. It could very well be the 02 sensor, or anything else that can lead to a super rich condition.
