THis is a hole for the front right corner bolt. This piece is broken off into half. Half of it is stuck on the cylinder head and the other half is in the block. It looks like it has been that way for a while cuz there were alot of carbon deposits on the bolt itself.

any suggestions as to how I can have it fixed or if it really is a problem or not.

p.s. how would I go about cleaning the surface of the block???

it is a problem. those are dowl pins. you need them to ensure the head and block match up perfectly. you need to get that crap out of there and put in a new pin.

go to the hardware store and get an attachment for a drill that will allow you to mildly sand down the block and head.. just to remove rust and get a clean surface. i forget the name of what its called.. you just don't want something too abrasive.

my machinist broke half of one of mine. i was told (on here i think) that you can get a replacement from satan, and that they are mainly there for block to head alignement.

Yeah you really need that piece.

And please while it's apartt clean off those carbon deposits.

when i cleaned my block and heas i used these little paint stripper wheels that screw onto a drill attachment. there made by 3m and liik like a brillo pad and come in burgendy and green. i used the burgandy ones to clean the block real good and the green one to go over everything once and make sure its all nice and shiny. they cost like 5 bucks a pack at autozone and the attachment for the drill is like 5 bucks too.

That is what a lot of people call "Scotch-Brite. Be careful. Even those pads will take metal away when you aren't paying attention to what you are doing. I use them to remove sealant, walkway non-skid and corrsion on the aircraft I work on. Works really well and leaves it smooth but will also leave pits too... So again, Be careful.

Use a big extractor to get it out. As in, a huge Easy-Out. Something that can really bite into it, and then you should be able to spin it and pull it out.

Mine broke off too, opposite side, though. I couldn't get it out, though, no matter what I used. I ended up using a stud (I cut the head off an old head bolt) in the place of it to line everything up. It worked fine, but I paid real close attention to everything to make sure it lined up correctly.

Also, That's a shit load of carbon in that thing?!?!?!?!

yo guyz thanks for all the replies. I've not tried to pull it out yet but I'm going to try it tomorrow. Hopefully it won't give me a hard time. I've got the part which costs 5dollars canadian here.

as far as the carbon deposites, the motor has close to 140k on it. That might be the reason?

Don't use cheap fuel too much. That's one of the reasons why there is the carbon build up. Once in a while fill your tank w/ racing fuel like on 76 fuel stations because they do clean your motor. They burn alot cleaner than regular fuel.
