Here is a pic from my head that just got back from the shop, if you look closely at the valves you'll see some black dust, there is quite a bit of this as well as metal flakes all over the head. Is there a way to clean this so that all that crap is not there when I install my head, because I'm sure that this is not the best stuff to get in my new turbo and motor.

I'd get a soft brush of some sort and sweep it like a broom. After that, I'd try some compressed air to blow it off. (If you don't have a compressor in the first place, in which case I would just blow it off first.) Just give it a close once or twice over to see if you got it all before you install it. That's no good inside your engine. IMO, shop should have cleaned it up for you. When I got my head back from ERT, I could have eaten off it.

Just in case anyone wanted to know what I did with this, the stuff on the valves was left over polishing compound, so I used a toothpick to scrape it from the valve seats and gave the whole head a bath in diesel, I then wiped it down with a microfibre towel and it was spotless.

Just for future cleaning. When it comes to cleaning the internal engine components it's best to use laquer thiner. it leaves nothing behind and grabbes all grime. Just dont get it on any paint!

Yeah the shop should definately have taken care of that for you. I would have brought it back if there was as much on it as you say.

Are you sure it was polishing compound and not assembly lube?
