80254, What is the difference?? Posted by DJ420a, Sep-07-04 01:40 PM
I put this under manual tranny forum, but I dont know if that was the right place.
How can I tell the difference between a ATX ECU and a Manual ECU? When I did the auto to manual swap, Im not the one that put the ECU back in, and the other was sold. The reason Im asking is because Ive have done everything and checked everything that I can think of and you guys can tell me to get this damn speedo and odo. working.
I have the 3 wires soldered to the right pinoouts. My gear in the tranny is nice and solid. My sensor is fine, I think because I bought a new one and got the same results.
Will the car run with a ATX ECU in it and the speedo not work? Would there be other symptoms?

Ok, Dino answered my question about would it run, and that is yes. Now how do I find out the difference between the two? Any codes on them or anything?

Look at the white sticker on it. Post the numbers on it. Does it start with MN or MR?

I did not think the MTX even had an ECU.

Not so much a 'seperate ECU'. You of all people should be familiar with that.

Well, time for 2GNT Computers 101...
...All 2GNTs have an ECU, an engine control unit. It is also known as a powertrain control module, by the way. This is the director of the fucking orchestra. There are two different PCMs made for each year, though. One is for the automatic version of the car, and the other for the 5 speed.
The A/T PCM looks for much of it's input from the TCU. That's the Transmission Control Unit, the computer that runs the A604 automatic transmission. Fortunately, the TCU outputs a speed signal that is the same as a 5 speed speedometer sensor. Also, the clutch switch corresponds to an output from the TCU. That is why we can rewire the A/T car to accept and run properly with a M/T, as long as you don't cut the TCU out with a pocketknife with the car on.
There are a lot of functions that are not present in the M/T PCM that are in the A/T ECU, things like the torque reduction circuit, torque converter lockup, etc. That is why using the M/T PCM is preferable to the A/T ECU after the 5 speed swap. Swapping ECUs prevents a lot of MIL codes, and just all around makes the car feel better.
I hope that this clears a lot of the PCM/TCU shit up. Basic knowledge of these componants will reduce the number of stupid questions that you ask, and reduce my anger level at the shitpoles of the world. :thumbsup

I think you're doing something wrong and just don't realize it.
Did you remove the TCU from the car? The speedo will never work if the TCU is still attached.
