79335, Is it the EGR block off??? Posted by DJ420a, Aug-19-04 05:24 PM
Ok, fired up my motor tonight for the first time in 2 months(reringed). While I was putting it back in, I went ahead and made an EGR block off. Took it out tonite to start beaking it in and it runs great except at idle, really rough, sometimes it acts like it will stall unless I give it gas. What are some of the symptoms that may occur when I do block off the EGR. Or is there something I forgot to do? All I did was block off the EGR. Didnt unplug anything, didnt take off any vac lines.
Thanx Ahead!! DJ

check the ECU for trouble codes?

If you blocked the EGR right, your idle will be fine. If you have a leak, it may not idle so well. Time to investigate...

Rough idle, and motor running fine above idle, usually means your cam timng marks/timing belt was not set correctly. Check your timing marks to make sure..If you have a vacuum gauge, and your timing is off, it will have low vac at idle. It should be around 17-19 Hg's at idle..if not, then your timing is prob off..

I dont see how, I lined the marks up perfectly. I can check again with top dead center right? Then if it is, can I use my adj. cam gears to fix it?
Thats weird cuz today I took the block off plate out and its running alot better, which leads to my new post. Please check it out!!!
Thanx DJ

What year is your car? That will answer how your ECu is testing for the EGR.
Later model cars (98, 99 specifically) test EGR by completely closing the IAC while at the same time opening th EGR wide. If the motor starts to die and it does not see the correct alteration in narrowband O2 signal, it understands that the EGR either did not respond or did not allow sufficient recirculated exhaust gas into the system to keep the engine at idle. At this point it stores a code to flag later. If that situation repeats at another "trip" it will trigger the CEL. As aftermarket performance enthusiats, we all know the CEL is mostly a go-fast light, and as such the most notable symptom of a blocked EGR is an ilde drop every now and again when the ECU runs its test. it is not a constant issue and it will not cause a constant fucked up idle situation mainly because the EGR does not operate constantly, and the ECU's first goal is to keep the motor running.
Does that shed any light on the situation?

How does that work on pre 98 ECU's?

Doesn't matter my 95 does the same shit, even though I haven't thrown a code for it yet.

95-96 and possibly 97 won't flag a flow code, but they check it the exact same way and will exhibit the exact same symptoms.

I get an insufficient flow code, and my car was made July 28, 1995 as a 96 model.

Acctually some do and some don't. I have a 95 but I still get the floe code :shrug I guess it just varies some in relation to the codes...
