I currently have a 96 eclipse NT with an 85 shot on it (stock internals)and am replacing my clutch...I want to eventually put a star kit on it and rebuild the engine but not for about a yr (money) and so i want to go ahead and get a clutch to compensate for that...I have heard nothing but good about the ACT 2100 and 2600 but know that currently they dont make a modular one for my car...i have done some reading on the site about the modular/non-modular differences and whatever and what everybody has said about Centerforce being crap (which is what I was going to get but have now changed my mind) and that everybody is going with ClutchMasters...anyway...heres my question, and I am sure that i am either misunderstanding something or not getting this this right but thats why i am asking...is the only difference between the 420a and the 4g63 clutch is that ours is modular and their isnt...or does it actually bolt up completely different...the reason i ask is because i really want the ACT 2100 clutch but I know they currently only carry for the 4g63 but if i put in a lightened flywheel and then the ACT clutch pieces doesnt that replace it all anyway and make it non-modular...and itsnt that what you have to do with the clutch master one too? this is prob all wrong...i am not that good in the tranny department so any advice is appriciated...and if there is another thread with this same info in it, just point me in that direction-i must have missed it...TIA!!!!!!

They have different splines, so the clutch plate wouldn't fit onto the input shaft of your transmission. I don't have any direct experience with ClutchMasters or Centerforce. I have a Spec Stg3 non-modular with a Fidanza flywheel, and I love it. For being a 6puck ceramic clutch, it has really smooth engagement and light pedal pressure. Anyways, as far as the clutch question goes, there's more than the modular/non-modular that differs the 4g63 and the 420a clutches. First off, I have a non-nodular 420a clutch by using a non modular flywheel from a 95 neon, so that's really not the issue.

The bottom line is that you won't be able to get a 4g63 clutch to work with your 420a for several reasons. One, is that the flywheel that mates properly to the pressure plate on a 420a won't be conversant from the 4g63. Furthermore, while the 420a flywheel has certain specs associated with it that will completely differ it from a 4g63 incuding the bolt pattern from the crankshaft and the bolt pattern for the pressure plate. Moreover, the step heights will be different as well.

The only way I see that it might work, is if you like me got a 420a non-mod flywheel, had the step height cut to .610 (the 4g63 step), used a 4g63 clutch disk, and then was able to change the polt pattern on the pressure plate to properly have it mate to the 420a flywheel. It IS very, very close, so a clever clutch maker probably could make it work.

Personally, for ease of install if you don't have such a fabricator available, I'd probably just get a 420a specific clutch, such as a SPEC or CM, preferrably stage 3 for SPEC and 4 for CM, if you're seeking power above 300 lbs of torque or so.

True. It's still early in the morning after the long SO weekend. You'd have to use the 420a clutch disk and potentially use the 4g63 pressure plate such as an ACT 2100 or 2600.

hey, thanks guys...i really appriciate your input...and no, i didnt buy the rims...decided to stick with the original ones i was going to get-the exel maj in hyperblack-ya, but it was really cool seeing you guys too, thanks!! one more question for you guys though...where did you get the SPEC clutch from...i live down the street from summit so I called them and they dont carry them and the only places online that have them only come modular, not non-modular...i wanted non-modular so i could get a lightened flywheel...but does the flywheel REALLY make a difference...cuz if not, i will just stick with the modular-i think that set up has a 14-15 lb flywheel? anyway...oh and they dont carry clutchmasters either...figures...oh well, TIA again...

I believe Howell sells a Spec clutch with lightened flywheel that is modular. A modular clutch is a lot easier to change vs. a non modular, but it's also more expensive to replace. I got my clutch and flywheel from ERT, and was more than pleased with their service. The flywheel makes a pretty noticeable difference in my opinion. I am not a big drag racing fan though, I like upshift/downshift driving, and the light flywheel really shines there. It made heel/toe a lot easier.
