my ECU has the code for Evap system failure on and it will not go away.. my emissions test is coming soon and i dont want to fail it. ive checked the canister and even eliminated it to see if it would stop teh code but it did not . ive replaced the gas cap and all. its a 97 RS 5 spd. it drives fine but this code was on since i bought the car. there are no vacuum leaks or anything even when the canister was connected and from factory it still had the code.. i took my check engine bulb out but if they plug in to my ecu i know they will see its there.. i can reset the ecu but it comes right back? how can i get it off for good? anyone.?

it comes right back because something is wrong, removing the canister is not a good idea. tell me what code you have i will tell you whats wrong.

its code 31 EVAP failure it says in my book. nothing else. not how to fix or what could be wrong.. i know removing it wont fix the code but i removed it cause i didnt want junk getting sucked back into my motor. also i removed the EGR system.. which i code for that comes too but i can put that back on for emissions. but the EVAP Failure i cannot figure out. the hoses are all fine . the gas cap is new and it was all plugged in like normal and the code kept coming right back.. i bought the car from the dealer and like a week later the code came.. i just cant figure it out.. any idea??

Take it to someone that can read codes on your way to emissions and have them reset it. Make sure you have a full tank of gas, or below a 1/4. The ECU will not run a evap test in either condition because above 3/4 a tank is too much gas and not enough room to pull a vac in and below 1/4 is too little gas and too much room to pull a vac in, which would cause inconsistent readings. So they program the ECU to not test in those situations.

I have the same problem with mine. I got code 0045 which is a large leak. So when emissions came, I went to advanced auto parts on a full tank of gas, had them earsed my code(for free I might add) and then went to the emission station and passed with no problem.

Check out this thread, the first post might show you a place to start to trouble shoot. You'll just have to sift through all the childish bs first.

97grnrs...here is the info i told you i would get you...sorry it was a rough weekend. Disregard any of the previous statements they are not perfectly correct and probably repeated comments from a mechanic that were misunderstood.

To get your code....several condition must be met.

Temp greater than 170 degrees
No low fuel
Engine in closed loop
Idleing for 2 mins
Man vac less than 15.7 hg at alt less than 8000'

The engine must have passed the Leak detection pump strictor (that is not misspelled) evaporative test.

The code is for "insufficient vapor flow", replacing the ecm will not fix this.

Poss causes:
Evap solinoid is installed upside down...electrical conn must be on the top.
Hoses are plugged up.
Bad evap solinoid.

keep in mind the hose and lines that go all the way back to the tank are also involved and need to be made sure they are not clogged.

Filling the tank with fuel will not work, that is the largest misconception i have heard. My 97 and 96 run thier full evap test with a full tank.

If you clear the codes and fill the tank and attemp emissions:
1. the ECU records the number of starts the car has on it since the last code was set. on basic everyday driving for a average person it takes about 50 starts to log all emission tests. The emissions people will see this number and know if all tests were run.

In IL they will not pass you if all tests were not run on the ECU

Since you are not getting the LDP code i would expect the LDP test to be completed and passed, next check all vacuum lines on the intake, to and from the emissions components in the fender and to the fuel tank. Next make sure the evap canister is not clogged, and last make sure the soliniod is actuating and is not clogged. The fender well is a bad area make sure all wiring is intact and not corroding or broken.

I own my own MT 2500 scanner (snap-on) from when i was in the shop and this info is straight from the unit and a little of my own.

According to the crash book, it will not run the test until 3/4 of a tank. I've drove my car around for weeks getting gas like everyday, no code. Soon as it drops below 3/4, I get the light. And I did not hear that from some mechanic
