78923, Before break-in procedures
Posted by DJ420a, Aug-12-04 12:46 PM
Ok, Ive read everyones theories on breaking in our engines and they are all mostly great ideas. I just have one question though. The straightest and longest road near me is a highway and its about 10 to 15 miles away. My question is, how do I run the car till I get to the highway??

Thanx ahead

best thing for breaking in an engine is city driving. stop and go. compression breaking.

Explain. Whats the process on "city break-in"? How does this work, Im very curious? I dont live in a city, but a small town. Close enough.
Thanx man

just like dont drop the clutch when at a stop light, take it easy, dont rev above 3-3500rpm and just do alot of compression breaking

One more thing. With this process, how many miles should I do it and how often should I change the oil??

Again, thanx

what exactly has been done to the engine?

any boring or anything? or just taken apart and rebuilt.

I had the shitty "Total Seal" rings, so I was really smokin. Anways, Just a take apart replace the rings, rehoned the block, and new cams. But that doesnt matter.

Sorry, I meant the cams dont matter. Just wanted to clear that up.

dont need to change the oil after startup, 3000 miles.

This might sound dumb, but why not? Is it because there no new internals? Just the rings are the only new moving part? I was under the assumption to change the oil 2-3 times befire reaching 3k.

Learn me.

Anymore suggestions???

After honing and re-ringing my engine, I am doing the following:

Remove actuator on internal wastegate to prevent boosting
Start up engine and idle for 20 minutes (fully warming up and looking for leaks)
Change oil (dino oil)
Let car warm up again and drive for 20 miles (repeatedly doing 30-50 mph runs and compression braking back to 30 mph)
Drive another 200 miles in stop and go traffic (aim to vary the RPM and not lug the engine)
Change oil and filter (dino oil)
Drive another 400 miles in stop and go traffic (aim to vary the RPM and not lug the engine)
Change oil (dino oil)
Drive another 400 miles (some interstate, some city)
Change plugs and check compression (if its good, put the actuator back on and give it low boost)
Drive another 500 miles
Change oil and filter (put synthetic in)
Give it what its built for

I'm on the "drive another 500 miles" stage. My compression was 197-197-200-200 on 8.8:1 pistons and hastings rings. So far so good...take it for what its worth.
