78645, 4g63 swap??
Posted by Geelo, Aug-06-04 06:05 PM
I know it is nearly retarded to do this swap because of the money issue and all, but if you were going to attempt it, what would you need?

engine, tranny, ecu, wiring, axles??

I'm selling my 420a block i was building because of finical issues, and in about a year I will be able to get back into it, and I was wondering what I would need to do to do the swap, or if I should just save up to get a GST. THanks for your help, and please save the crap for somewhere else.

You need a complete wrecked GST. Cut the whole front clip off of it, weld it onto your 2GNT. Wire everything.

You dont need to weld the whole clip but precise measuring of the mounts and rewelding them into yours is a must. You will need a donor and lets face it, the donor will cost you at least 3000.00. You can buy a decent 95/96 FWD turbo for 5000. A rough one for 4000. just not worth it. If your body is nice find a gst with crap body and swap out the fenders ect and paint it.

To do this you need everything......your car will be a shell when you start moving parts....just way too much work....makes the 2.4 look like another day in the park!

What happened to that guy on the board here who actually did the swap and had pics? It ran too.

Yeah he dropped a 6 bolt in though...even more work. The very first guy who did it posted here a year ago but the car caught fire 8 months later. totally unrelated to the swap though. It can be done but the work and money is a lot. The guy with the 6 bolt claimed to spend 3000. which i guess is poss but it would take you a long time to piece together some misc parts for cheap from a 2g. he has a 1g donor.

or you can save time and frustration and give me your car... I'll give you a cookie.

(not trying to be mean, just giving a response appropriate to this question) I used to think that would work also, until I searched this forum... to the point where it said either buy a turbo kit or sell the car for a GST/TSi or GSX/TSi AWD.

good luck in whatever you choose.

Why do people continue to ask stupid questions and then try to ward off reactions by posting a "save the crap" disclaimer.

Just buy a 4G63 - in the long run they have more potential than our cars anyway.

if most people really think about it. to do this engine swap yourself, you need alot of mechanical/welding skills. and if you have that much skill, you can def rebuild and run a standalone on the 420a. the only downfall is our stock ecu not liking boost. after a rebuild, and ecu, the 4g63 isnt much better.

I never really noticed , but we really do get one or two 4g63 swap Questions a day...

I know that the swap isn't that reasonable, I just needed to get out that I was selling my 420a block, headcasting with all stock parts, ti springs and retainers and polished valve cover. Apperantly I worded my question wrong and more people cared about the 4g63 part, then the motor for sale. I put an add in the For Sale/wanted to buy section, but figured it wont hurt to addvertise here too.

It will hurt....you

Not sure how much time you have spent here but one rule is not to post in the wrong forum. Dont doit again we take it personal and the response you get wil be the opposite of what you wanted, especially when it involves a 4 g swap. I can not believe dino didnt just lock this from the start

That's clearly asking about a 420A-4G63 swap. You said you're selling you're engine due to financial issues, you didn't say "Hey buy my engine it has xxx done to it." I don't know why you were expecting people to ask about your engine and not tell you you're an idiot for thinking about the 4G63. Speaking of which, if you're having financial issues, how can you even fathom trying to swap in a 4G63? I realize you said it would be in a year, but still...that makes absolutely no sense.

The first thing you would need to do in order to find out what is needed (besides a lot of money and time), is to use the search. This inane question has vome up at least 50 times so far this month between here and toonerz. :rolleyes

I didn't releaize that it was such a big deal. I appoligize for it. If I talked about my engine so much then I would have been obvisiouly posting in the wrong section. So by mentioning it and leaving it at just that, it appereaed to be a post about a 4g63 question. Again, I appoligize.

But, would it be possible to just bolt the subframe of a gst to the front of your gs/rs? Not trying to be a smartass I was just wondering.

This post is also a good way to find who here is actually willing to help someone, and who is just going to be an ass about it.

Like DR said, the searc function is going to help you a helluva lot more than anyone posting a response. Have you ever even looked at a 4g63 car next to a 420a car. It's more than the crossmember that's different. A lot more.
78676, RE: 4g63 swap??

Yes, but it is an extremely difficult and very expensive operation. It would be necessary to change the motor mounts, install a GS-T tranny, and finally change the whole wiring harness and ECU. It would be better to sell the car and just buy a GS-T. Here is a breakdown of the components and approximate costs:

1. 4G63 turbo engine (stock) $1500
2. transmission (stock GS-T FWD) $500
3. wiring harness for engine $300
4. 4G63 ECU (stock) $300
5. shift linkage $200
6. custom engine mounts $200
7. chassis cross member $100
8. complete exhaust $200
9. intercooler, turbo, related parts $500
10. boost gauge/fuel filter, etc $300
11. Installation $1500
This totals $5600, and doesn't include unforeseen obstacles in the installation. For about $2000, you should be able to get over 100 hp out of the stock 420A motor with porting, valvetrain and electronics modifications. As well, for the cost, it is cheaper to turbocharge for 420A motor with a bolt on kit.

You'd be surprised man. Some of the most helpful people are the ones who would do whatever they could to discourage you from sounding like a complete moron talking with others in the community. Plain and simple: that "swap" is a joke. Walking up to a DSMer and mentioning it is like walking up and saying, "Any of you guys gay like me?" You'll get thrashed, then clowned, then run out of town. Best idea ever: drop it. :)

Oh yeah, and I'm considered the "Big Brother" or "No0bs' Hero" of 2GNT BTW. If I'm telling you to stop talking retarded, it's pretty bad imo. :P
