well i just got done porting/polishing my extra head and now im ready to put it on this weekend. im going to take this bare head and transfer all my stock stuff from the head i have now to the knew one. i got a head gasket kit from napa and i know i need to get new head bolts and head studs. i was told today that i also need to get new lifters. do i really need to get new lifters? i thoght ours were solid.
i also have a new intake manifold im going to put on. i cleaned it up and made look real pretty. im assuming i just have to transfer all the vac hoses and sensors.
but this morning i discovered another problem. i was early for work so i thought id check to see if i had any other problems to fix while im in there working. so i pulled the dipstick out and put my finger over the whole. i could feel air puffing out :bash i heard that was a way to check if ur piston rings were bad. so im assuming i need to replace those too. damn my curiosity. so now im going to assume i need new piston rings. what else do i need to replace while im working. do i need to get main bearings and rod bearings? do i even need to get new ones if they aren't bad? i'll probably need an oil pan gasket. any others that i will need?
please let me know if i am missing anything. i dont want to get working and figure out that im missing somthing vital.
oh, yeah...i don't want to build my engine anymore cause im going off to college this year and i obviously need money for that. the p&p is the last mod for a while. i basically want my motor to be a fun daily driver (as of right now) that runs like its fresh off the production line. any hints/tips about the install would be appreciated as well :thumbsup

our lifters are hydrolic. and who told you, you needed new ones?

also, did you do a compression check before you rip off the head? do you burn oil? i never heard of any 'puff' test with putting the finger over the dip-stick tube.

I think the "puff test" he is talking about is the advice given to those that think they have a cracked ringland.

Ussually this is followed by puffs out of your dipstick tube. If thats the case though, they are pretty perceptable and mine were clearly dark smoke.

Make sure you get the valve seats ground and new valve guides put it in before you transfer all your valvetrain from your old head. I'd get the valves reground too.

Yeah...you shouldn't just swap the valves from one head to another. The wear patterns on the valves would probably keep them from sealing well. To ensure a good seal, you should get a good shop to do a valve job on the head. And if you are going to do that, you should opt for at least a 3 angle valve job (price is similar).

I wouldn't jump into ring replacement just yet. I'd probably do a compression and leak down test before condemning them. Changing the rings with the engine in the car can be done (I did it last month). Its just alot of work if you don't really have to.
