7838, headgasket questions...
Posted by phatGS, Nov-21-01 09:23 AM
Is there anywhere online (like a vfaq or something) with a walkthrough of changing our headgasket, everything I'm reading is pointing to that being my problem (alot of white smoke). Any walkthroughs though?

7846, symptoms...what's wrong?
Posted by phatGS, Nov-22-01 08:41 AM
I dunno...today i was looking at it...when the smoke comes out it looks white...but after it clears some it looks bluish...what is wrong w/ my car....any ideas??????

i think blue smoke means that your burnin up oil as well as gas.

that correlates with bad rings, have u checked your plugs?? or compression??

let the pros help u, just givin u more ideas to pinpoint the problem

they're new plugs...any way to check by looking at them if it's burning oil?

Have you checked your compression in all cylinders? Do that first to determine whats wrong. As far as tailpipe smoke: black- runnin hella rich, bluish white and smells really bad- burining oil, and i'm not too sure what burining antifreeze is, but you should be able to tell if its oil or not(ever get behind that ol clunker with a trail of burining oil smoke, damn dat stinks!) If you are burning oil, your plugs will be charred black and smell like that burnt oil. Normal looking plug should look like a whitish tan on the center porcelin part.

what's the website with how to do the compression test?

7851, RE: symptoms...what's wrong?
Posted by XtremeRS, Nov-22-01 02:56 PM
Compression test is simple. Just go to your local auto parts store, and the tester is like 25 bucks or so. Basicly you warm the engine, take out all your spark plugs, and screw in the tester into each cylinder and crank over the motor until the needle doesn't climb anymore. Record the psi number, and repeat for each cylinder. Not too sure what the general psi should be, maybe around 160-190? There also should not be any greater than 10% difference in the psi's between the cylinders.
