does the msd 6212 require you to buy 1 or 2 tach adapters?

As long as you have 2 ignition coils, you only need 1 tach adaptor regardless of the type of MSD controller. I believe that the 6212 is designed for a V8 (4 coil packs) but you will only be using 2 of the drivers instead of 4.

You don't really need either. It only serves to keep the CEL away.
