77751, I've got a serious problem...... Posted by Strauss, Jul-17-04 01:45 AM
Well as I was driving home yesterday my oil light came on right after a good hard 18psi 3rd gear pull. I coasted into my driveway and shut the car off. My oil level is fine, but when I give the car some revs it knocks like crazy. I cracked the oil feed line going into the turbo and nothing came out. Could my oil pump have failed? Thanks guys.....and I just got the damn car running right on 18psi.

knocking sounds like a rod bearing. No oil in the oil return line sounds like a bad oil pump. No oil from bad pump makes rod bearing go poo.

Could be a pump failure, but our oil pumps are pretty darn good and very simple. Its only 2 metal rotors, a relief plunger, and relief spring, that makes up the entire pump. I've never really heard of rotor breaking/failing before, but hell, you never know...hmm didn't Dino break an oil pump? I don't know..no oil at the turbo means there isn't crap for pressure, which, well, isn't good :( I'm sure you have some engine damage..Good luck with it man

I gather you don't have an oil pressure gauge??
There is a little collar inside the oil pump that is controled by the spring. If you get too much oil pressure, which may have occurred with 18psi the collar can get wedged in the up position as I have just discovered. When it's *up*, you don't get any oil pressure. I'm not exactly sure why b/c I don't know how the oil flows through our pump, maybe Matt can elaborate on this ... ?????

That collar is the pressure relief plunger. Its basically a bypass valve for oil, and it controls the oil pressure by acting as a gate for bypass oil flow. Yeah, if that is stuck all the way up, then you have too much oil being sent the wrong direction..going away from the main oil gallerys..I've never heard/seen of a plunger getting stuck, but if it happend to you, then i def would check it. Its simple to get at..sort of..:)
