7770, Few Beginner's Questions ?? Posted by 96TSI AWD, Nov-20-01 03:40 PM
I just bought a '96 talon tsi awd (at) with 87k. Ive had the car for a few days now and have come up with a few questions. First, when the car idles, i can hear one of the belts lightly squeaking. 2. I dont know what maintenance has or has not been done, such as the timing belt. anything to really worry about? how could i tell what was done? 3. when the car is cold and i shift from park to auto, when i first push the gas peddle the car kinda jumps but after the first time it doesnt do it anymore, unless you shift from park to auto again?? 4. I checked the trans fluid and it looks a little dirty, red but a little dirty. Should I change it? I've heard that changing the trans fluid on a car with too many miles could cause trans failure. Thanks for all the help!

I dont know too much about the 2nd gen turbo motor, but I do know about the 1G motor. My friend has a 92 Laser RS with the same engine(non turbo version). The belt is probably either your power steering belt or your AC belt. Probably a good idea to get both new ones. The timing belt on our cars should be changed at 60k intervals. I have no idea about your tranny though. Ill leave that to the auto guys.
Hope this helps

Yes aftter a while trans fluid can build up enough gunk that fresh trans fluid will do more harm than good. But if your trans has gotten to this point it's only a matter of time before it goes. If you plan on driving the car hard, or any track driving, old fluidor new if the trans is on it's way out, it's going to go. So if it doesn't look too bad I would change it, and hope service was kept up with...
