77105, PS belt.........AGAIN
Posted by silvereclipse30, Jul-05-04 06:22 PM
well after a few GOOD races......I roll up to my friends house I'm just sittin there and I hear the slappin so I turn the car off and check it out.....sure enuff the PS belt broke and looks like a piece is wedged under the alternator belt....well the shits all tangled up and the car was too hott so I'm just gonna leave it for the night....the first PS belt was a gatorback and it slid off and broke and the bando belt that comes with the AFX UDP just broke tonight....I got the right size gatorback belt the first time(the size thats listed on here, I swear there too big)....what would cuz this I've looked a million times....its annoying!!

That's odd. I have gatorback belts on my car and they hold great, even at 18psi. I've had the same one on for over a year and a half.

you want about 1/2 inch flex in the belts. toooo tight is bad.

im guessing that the UDP is loose or the tensioner is bad (or loose). try isolating the problem by running a single belt between the UDP and the p/s pump, using the p/s pump to tighten the belt down. if the problem stops, its the tensioner, otherwise its the UDP. divide and conquer.

besides that is there any other way to know if its the tensioner......also how would I go about tightening the UDP???

not really, lol. i mean, you could randomly guess, but its much easier this way, you will know in as much as a couple days, or as little as a few hours. you tighten the UDP by tightening the transverse bolt that holds it in place. it seems like in about 5-10% of the installs that that bolt backs out a little after use. spend a while searching (if you havnt already) and you will come upon a plethora of knowledge pertaining to this subject.

edit: also, as someone else has mentioned, it is possible that overtightening the belt could have lead to an improper geometry among the pullies, causing the belt to slip. you might want to try this first if you dont want to try running a p/s-to UDP right away. diagnosing s slipping belt is really hard because of the amount of factors involved. a question: did the slipping belt have what could be described as an "itallisized 'V'" chunk taken out of it? that could be an immediate sign of a wobbly UDP (or harmonic damper on stock cars).

r u on AIM?? umm...half the belt was still on and the other half tangled and shreaded much like the last time this happened....nothin is wobbling (pullies)....

could the UDP be on too far...I didn't do it so I don't know what it looks like.....had it done at a shop with my timing belt and all that shit......

u need the updated tensioner pulley, or learn how to align your pullies better

how to aline my pullies better??? how the hell would I misalign them??? anyway......is there a way to tell if the tensioner is messed up, signs of wear/visal???

your pullies can come out of alignment for two resons:

1) the arent installed to the correct torque spec, or the pullie "backs off" a but. this is not rare on a UDP install.

2) you overtighten the belt to a point where it litterall pulls the pullies int to the center apex of tension (all towards each other). this can cause the belt to slip because its riding at an angle instead of a perpendicular plane to the belt length. this is very rare.

Your udp probably isnt on all the way. causing them to be missaligned and too pop off.

whats the length of the belt needed if removing the tensioner but keeping PS and AC with a AF/X UDP?

my belt always falls off....always...

i like to watch my UDP wabble around...
