7692, problem or is this supposed to happen? Posted by mitsuman, Nov-19-01 10:45 AM
well the other night i was in the car with 2 of my buddies and i kinda take off at a light but not really and some truck with 3 people, i guess thinks im trying to race him. well anyway for some reason he pulls out a gun so i take off then pull into my friends street. i went around the block several times(trying to lose him) i was losing him but for some reason my breaks felt like they got loose or sumthing cuz i was slaming on the breaks every turn, then when i slammed on the brakes it felt like i was barly taping them. well i lost him went back to the house and left it at that. went to bed wondering what the fu** could it be. next morning it was fine. so i was happy. i asked my freind what he thinks it could be and he said that i might have boiled my brake fluid. is this true? and how would that ffect my braking? tia

hmm that sounds pretty scary man. Did you tell the cops?
Anyway you say you were slamming on the brakes everyturn right, well you may have been experiencing brake fade. don't know if it's how you desbribed it but when i fade my brakes they feel like they get really hard but they don't grab at all and hence you are fading, scary thing fade is also. Check your pads to see if they are in good condition I guess.

Now that I've read that a couple times to get past the part about the gun...
You experiences brake fade. You heat up all the brake components and they no longer grip, pads and rotor are to hot to create friction and don't grab to stop you, yes you can boil vbrake fluid and it can loose it's hydrolic properties and the pedal gets mushy, like there is water in it.
Now that everything is cooled off, as long as you stop fine now no permanant damage was done.
MNy suggestion.. stay away was crazy people in ptrucks.

If you boil brake fluid shouldnt you replace all of it instead of just bleeding the brakes??? And how often should the pads in the drum brakes be changed? I chaned my front pads myself but havent a clue when it comes to drums.
