76073, My 2G's a $ Pit. Do mainteneance or complete new motor. Long but please read/help/advise Posted by scirio, Jun-13-04 08:48 PM
For the following keep in mind I am brrr-oke! But I have some $. This dang car is a malicious money pit. The time has come to replace my timig belt and other related maintenance. At the same time I am going to replace my headgasket because it has that notorious leak closest to the drivers side corner of it. I have a rferal to a guy that does work for some of the DSMtooners locally and without trying to screw me (i think/hope) he gave me an estimate of $1500 for everything I just mentioned, labor and parts included.
Cant I just buy a new dang motor and get it put in for a few hundred bucks. Where does one buy a motor. i feel like I am just putting way to much $ into this 10 yr old slow peice of crapa. Its a 95 RS. I put alot of money painting it and doing the 99 coversion.
I love the car tho. I bought it for 3-4 thousand bucks from my dad and spent like 3000 fixing the body after my accident in august. now $1500 for a damn HG and timing replacement.
What should I do, can I keep cost under $1500 for a new motor swap or something???. Please help me on what I should do. I'm at 121K, 95 RS, Manual trans, power doors and window swap. What do you think its worth? I dont want to sell it, theres no way I can make my $$ back.
sincerely, bummed out in california
this is teh suck.

Agreed, I'd do it myself, but I'd also make sure I had the right tools i.e.; torque wrench, and a damned 3-jaw gear puller that'll create enough pull to remove the harmonic balancer instead of shattering into 5 pieces and flying into your face :censored (worthless harbor freight piece of crap), sorry. Beyond that it'd be cool to do it yourself, cheap and makes you proud. One question that I'm not sure of, are the head bolts torque to yield?

That's called the Chrylser Harmonic Balancer Puller and it's a free rental at Autozone. Works the first time everytime because it's the tool you're supposed to use.
Scirio, I'd say to save the most money, you sould call up Bob Kise and get the t-belt stuff (belts, tensioner, pulley), and the MLS. Then make a post for some help from the other SoCal guys. (You are in SoCal right?) There should be some local guys there to help you out. This is the cheapest route to take. You can do it yourself, but obviously it's easier with someone nearby to help you swear and curse at things when the going gets tough.
Good luck bro.

NOt in SoCal, I'm in the *sigh* SAn Francisco Bay Area. Not alot of 2gnt's around here. Quite a bit of 4g63ers though. I went to a DSM meet here and they were no joke, probably would help me though. I was asking around if they can help or have a hook up with a timimg change and some of them didnt even understand that I had a dif engine than they did :rolleyes . I gues I'll just ask for a quote from Satan or a shop nearby I guess. But repair prices in the Bay Area are through the roof. I think 96eclipsed said he paid over a thousand for a HG repair.

Here's your solution imo. Drop a line to FarOutKucki, your Nor*Cal brother here in Phoenix. He is getting ready to head back home for about 6 weeks here this month. I bet he might be willing to help you out if you have the parts and tools. Granted, he's a 4g63 guy too, but he's been around the block enough to maybe figure it out. The head gasket just takes some time and the t-belt is the trickiest part of the whole deal. Joe will have internet back at his new apt here Wednesday, so drop him a PM for now and I'll give him a call for you. We 2GNTers take care of our own, right? :thumbsup

I'll hit up kucki but I dont wanna waste his time, he doesnt HAVE to help. I mean I dont wanna impose. :shrug But I'll ask.
And, I have no tools. Just the basics, socket wrenches, sockets, deep sockets n stuff like that, but I can rent cant I?

Hey Scirio, wow finally somebody from frisko. I live up near City College of SF but i've never seen your car around (since I drive around the city practically every week). I wish I could help you out with the HG and all but I've never tried it and been pretty busy with work. And since you live in SF the closet Autozone would be in Oakland; since our "local" autoparts store is Kragen. Which area are you from by the way.
