Sup guys, long time no post here!
I just came back from Europe, a 2 weeks long trip.
and I ONLY saw one 1996 Green Eclipse GS in Switzerland Zurich. Damn, went to 6 countries and only saw ONE eclipse.

Anyway, I have a big issue about my eclipse.
but let me say, I searched on over heat and so on, but my question here is mainly asking on what the problem could be, so please give me your opinions.

The problem is simple, my engine is overheating. Today in NYC the air temperature outside is around 90+ degree under direct sun light, and I drove for about 30 miles. I did brought my logger, so I plug it in. at one point, it did shoot up to 245+ degree. (only once) so when I go home, i carefully looked at my Coolant gauge, EGT gauge, and my datalogger (coolant temperature in numeric values)

And I kinda found this out.
1) Temp won't go higher then 214 or 216 until a longer drive on highway maybe after 20-30 minutes drive
2) after long drive ^^^, and temperature go up to 230+, at idle, I REV the engine to high RPM, and the temp will not go down right away (so is that mean it's not the waterpump problem?)
3) I realize that when the EGT go up to 1450F and above, the temp of the coolant shown in my logger will climb up (keep going up) like 228, 230, 232, 234, 236 etc.

What could it be? please help?
Water pump? coolant? themostat? cap?

let me tell you what I did before to the car.
1) turbo charged.
2) just pulled the head 3 months ago, changing Headgasket, all gaskets, brand new water pump, timing belt, tensioner, pulleys, flushed the coolant, etc.

So, I really do'nt think it can be the water pump, but can it be the coolant mixture is not good? or I think the most chance will be themostat? please help!!!

Sorry for the long post, but it's getting hot here, and with a turbo charged car, of course I will be race in the summer, but if it get over heated like this, I can't do shit!!!

Havent seen you in a long time Hows it goin?...and I had a similar problem and I just flushed my radiator and bought a new themostat and cleand the housing up good n slaped that bad lad on there and it idles and runs great now.....no more scarry needle towards the hot side

Yeah.. after spending 1 months taking out engine, change everything, and fix everything. I was enjoying boosting everywhere. lol.
so nice, except this overheat happened, but I think this should be a piece of cake compare to my other problems before!

I would drain your coolant, remove & replace the thermostat (get a 160* from howell), radiator cap, and a good 50/50 mix of coolant. Also when filling the system, notice that the thermostat has that jiggle valve at the 12 o'clock position. That 'burps' air out of the system and prevents air pockets from staying in the block (contributing to hot spots). Leave the radiator cap off while filling the system, when it seems full, start the car and let it run. Prior to the stat opening, you will notive tiny bubbles coming from the jiggle valve (this is a good thing) and when the stat does finally open, the level will drop. Top it off, along with the overflow tank, and you are good to go. Just keep an eye on the level once a week or so.

i would suggest doing that FIRST with your current coolent. my neon sudenly overheated one day, and for some reason (just like my oil), i have a very slow mystery leak. my story:

started overheating one day for no reason, except for when i was cruising...the overheating only ocured at long stops. got back home and found the coolant to be low, so i topped it off. still overheated. let the engine cool, pulled off the thermostat cover and overflow tank cover and started her back up. MASSIVE bubbles poured out, indicating an air pocket in the cooling system. after the bubbles stopped, i topped of the coolant and ive been fine for a few months now. i would try that first before tearing everything apart.

edit: just to avoid confusion, my head gasket is perfectly intact. the bubbles all came from the thermostat housing, and i never see smoke. i have a slow leak somewhere (only god knows) that slowly replaces coolant with air, lol. i consider this normal, just somthing i have to check every few weeks.

Do NOT use a 50/50 mix of coolant. It's the WATER that absorbs the heat.

ALso a question, I konw that Howell sell the 160F thermostat, but I don't really want ot wait on the shipping and stuff, coz I want to get the car running asap.

You guys know if autozone, Pepboys or etc has them?

I got mine from autozone. just ask for the gasket and the thermo. and buy a pack of bazooka joe bubble gum for me.

so autozone do carry the 160degree F thermostat?
Coz I thought they only carry the stock thermostat which is 195F
