7575, are pulleys really worth it and next mod Posted by evan2, Nov-19-01 12:07 AM
ok well hi all.. im new to these boards but not to Dsms..
got a 95 auto RS.. was all about show but now i wanna throw some more performance into ... now i usually hear turbo turbo but this being a 2gnt forum i dont think i will..
i heard good and bad things about pulleys.. whats your guys opinion.. i saw the afx pulley. do we only need one pulley?? or do we need or can use more.. and how hard is the install.. i like doing things myself.. have a auto hobby shop here on base.. im air force so i live right near the base and can use all thier tools and lifts.really cheap..
also i have now a iceman CIA, Weapon R muffler (heard downpipes really dont do much for a NT) and a kamikaze 4-1 header. what is a next good mod.. i wanna do internals.. because you really cant see them.. so most wouldnt know what i had.. but is it to early for that????
Im prob going to juice it soon.. so anything i can do that will help with that...
thanks guys..
Evan

Everyone pretty much says that pulleys are worth it. I've had mine in my garage for about 4 months, so i cant tell you my preference. To put it on you need a pulley puller (if you search in the archives, there has been many posts on how to install it). Also, there is only 1 pulley. It powers the alternator and power steering

I love mine. And yes, I believe there are other pulleys to get, not just the underdrive pulley. I have the unorthodox one tho, and I have no squeaky belts or weird noises whatsoever, besides the famed bearings going bad in my tensioner, which is a common side effect of all UDP cars, nothing serious to worry about as I have been told by several peeps......

Well, yes, there are other pulleys to get for other cars, but I believe the only pulley availiable for our 420a powered 2g's is the crank pulley. And cam gears... Mine was on the car when I bought it, so I cant comment on before/after, but my tensioner never went bad... I just took it off along with the ac system the other day, so I dont have to worry about that anymore anyways...

I got mine installed and really like it. I don't have any squeaking probs. I had it done with my 60k maintenance, since the labor for it was free!!

Mike, tensioner bearings go out. underdrive pullies don't cause it, they help reduce the chance, if anything. Not to bust your balls, i just don't want anyone to get the idea that UDP's will break stuff. My tensioner bearings have been dead for a long time, and i've never run anything but a stock pulley. squeek, squeek, grind, grind..
You've been listening to ARD again.. heh

guess i need to stop listening to ARD then :P
BUT i did have a brand new tensioner put on...so it does make u wonder tho.......

Hey,hey, hey!! I just installed my UDP on sat. and i love it!!!! I can def feel a difference, esp at 3500 rpms and up. More pull i can say for sure. I don't feel a whole lot of difference in the low end, but it really helps out the top end. Guessing, i say about 10 HP, no more, maybe 8? For 160 bucks, you can't go wrong! Follow the 10 step skinny on how to put it on, it should be in the archives, i believe tim97rs posted it. The old pulley is hellllllaaaaaaaaaaaa tight!!!! I used a 3 jaw, 5 ton puller, and an impact wrench, and did the job nicely, but you can use hand tools also.

Yes the pulley is a great mod, very high bang for the buck. And they are not going to wear tensioners or bearings. I believe they put less stress on the motor and parts due to lower rotational mass.

Everyone seems to have and AFX, didn't another company make one also? Unorthodox right? I thought I saw at one point that people were having less problems with the unorthodox. Maybe I have it backwards...

there arent any problems with either.. they both do what they were intended to do.. there is the occasional whine from the belts that come with the afx but all you really have to do is get some diff ones from the auto parts store... and be sure to tighten them good..
my afx is still waiting to be put on..

BTW, mine is Unorthodox Racing, dunno if one is better than another, but mine has done just fine.
P.S. Mike, thanks.. I have been slaving' over top and under her for a year now... and a lot was done when I bought it, so I have been able to accomplish a lot in a short time, expecially since I dont drive the car.. I have all the time in the world to have it torn apart and do it right. I want a Venom intake manifold damnit, someone test it out!
