75679, EGT CHECK!!! Pic.... question??
Posted by bigmcell, Jun-06-04 08:13 AM
Aight for all you tuners let a brother know if this is a lil high for u or not. I'm not a genius and cant convert C-->F that great. I know 900 is around like 1625 or so( i think). At what temp does pistons/engine melt. (Stock 4g63t on my GST Spyder so im not sure if its alum, or what) Also here in this pic is what i hit the other day, let me know if thats too high that i should be worried or not:

I'm sure a good bit of the 2GNT population can guide you in the proper direction, but we have chrysler motors. ;)

I may not be right but I thought temps on the 4g63's were supposed to be around 1425 max? LOL

yeah uh IIRC you start melting stuff around 1600 ish

800 degrees celsius (C) is equal to 1,472.00 degrees fahrenheit (F).
900 degrees celsius (C) is equal to 1,652.00 degrees fahrenheit (F).
950 degrees celsius (C) is equal to 1,742.00 degrees fahrenheit (F).

and just by looking at the pic...it looks a little hot..your going into the red thar

Holy scheidt...that'd probably fuck up a stock motor pretty hardcore! Unless something's wrong with your gauge, you shouldn't want to cross 900C. I was hitting around 905-910 at the track when i made my run, and that was almost unbearable for me. I'd richen things up a bit or work with timing some..it could be afterburn. If not, then aluminum was melting when that picture was taken :)

yeah, if its stock like you say, then quit mounting the egt probe in your spark plug holes.....hot dayam!

Thats way too hot, for the probe being right off the exhaust port. I would not puch 1600 degrees at all. You say you are rich, but how do you know this? Only really good way to tell is a wideband o2, NOT the stock o2 voltage readings. YOu may be too lean. What turbo do you run, and what boost do you run? What is your exhaust setup? All these can effect EGT's. I am kind of having the same issue(not that hot though) at 15 psi on the S16G. I will hit around 1575 on a LONG 4th gear pull, and acording the the AEM wideband, i'm around a 11.0:1 A/F, which is pretty damn rich. I'm starting to lead to the thought of the exhaust is causing a flow restriction, and the motor can't breathe out the gasses quickly enough, causing high EGT's. I would first add more fuel and see what happens. If you feel a noticalbe loss in power, then I'd be looking into an exhaust upgrade. If you feel power stay the same, or increase, then you were too lean. Of course, this is best done on a dyno and logging your A/F on a wideband.

One more thing, just because your EGT's say 1600 or whatever, doesnt mean your pistons are at that temperature. You have to remember that you have heat being disipated into the head, cylinder walls, and piston skirts, oil and coolant..

20 psi, t-28 turbo. 3" custom turbo back into a n1. no cat. usually at the end of my 1/4 run im just topping out 3rd, or just goin to 4th, and normally im just b4 900. cept the other day i was down the highway and hit that unexpectedly goin into 4th at WOT. hmmm any other questions bout my setup for help?

20 psi on that turbo is making for a pretty hot air charge. What kind of intercooler do you run? If anything, I'd say give it a bit more fuel.

Add fuel. You still haven't answered how you know it's running rich. Don't tune to that blinky A/F guage.

Also Im still runnin stock pump, hardwired. So I'm taking into consideration buying a walboro. Cept im not sure which is best for my setup. I think the 255 cuz i plan to upgrade to a 50 trim soon.... let me know some quick input and if this should also help the prob.

if the egt probe is real close to the head in the manifold 1600* could register from the oncoming flame front from being to rich too, just something to think about. i'm not saying you're rich. but rich can make you run hot just as running lean makes you run hot

20psi plus stock fuel pump?????????
that could explain that heat.

Well i assumed that played a small part of the problem? So in regards to my other question.... Which pump would be best for my setup? Let me know thanks

20psi with a stock pump on a 4G63 is suicide. wtf??

Walbro 255lph is the way to go. I mean , even people hard wire the walbros after they get em.

its funny that the gauge, engine, nothing else is "broken" or doing anything improper, all blame falls on the owner/driver/modifier because he doesnt know how to interpret anything

you need more fuel indefinately.

Also, wideband o2? or what.

Ok, I'm not a 4g63 expert but from what I know your running crazy amount of boost with the stock poopy 2g smic on a rewired fuel pump? And from my knowledge that is almost insane.... The t-25's efficiency range ends at about 18 psi so you crankin it to 20psi isnt really doin anything except makin the turbo work harder... But yah thats why you're egt's are skyrocket. Your running that much boost on that rewired fuel pump and on that schmeelll turbo. That is your EGT problem right there...
