What's up guys? I know everyone has thier own opinion about this, but I'm looking for facts. On an auto GS, have you had better acceleration with the overdrive On or OFF? I've tried it both ways, and honestly can't really tell. Sometimes it feels like the engine over revs with overdrive off, but truth is that doesn't mean more power. I figure you guys have the most experience, and might have an answer on this one. By the way, thanks for the help with my shake problem. Turns out the driver side axle was bent. Anyway, let me know.

We've got to move this to the A/T forum. In the mean time, you can consider overdrive a 4th gear. The O/D switch just determines whether the the transmission is allowed to use 4th gear when it wants to. Clicking the switch won't change acceleration experienced in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd.

But, ok... Having overdrive on allows the tranny to shift into 4th. Having it off keeps it from going into 4th. So, if you have overdrive off, you will stay in 3rd until it HAS to shift into 4th. Instead of shifting early.

And, if you are in 4th, and you turn it off, it will downshift into 3rd. When you want to go back to 4th... get it? lol

keep it off in city driving, it reduces wear on the trans. you might think its bad to rev that high, but it really isnt...on the highway i keep the neon at around 4.5kRPM for hours at a time (3-speed).

Really?

When you are cuising under 30 or 40, can you shift down to a lower gear by putting it in 2?

I always like to drop to 3rd gear when I am cruising at 4th at 75 mph. I have a tranny cooler though...

i cruise at 4.5kRPM becuase i only have 3 speeds. i dont manually manipulate them, lol. as far as damage, the trannie will be perfectly fine w/ no overdrive at about 40-50, but only in city driving. i wouldnt keep it off if you are going a consistant speed. the main reason you want it off is to keep the trans from going back and forth between 3rd and OD.

BTW, the trans in the neon is a totally different beast than the auto in the eclipse. mine is beefy and bullitproof. ;) thats why it can handle such high RPM for so long without melting down.

Shouldn't have effect on accel at all, like the previous posts says.
