74904, Head Gasket gone again.... Posted by extreme97nt, May-21-04 10:03 AM
Well it looks like this head gasket bit the dust. Yes it is the mls, Used mopar gasket sealent spray stuff, I have arp studs, It was torqued correctly, head and block were surfaced. I am running like 17psi. What alternatives do I have? Do I need to have the head o-ringed? This is getting annoying! It was just redone in January. Any Ideas?

If you did all that its not the headgasket, I doubt it.. could be many other things, why do you think its the HG. how bout valves, valve seals,etc..

i've got a few friends running the srt4 headgasket and boosting wellover 20psi. the motor i'm getting also is running the srt4 gasket with no problems it has around 2000 miles on it right now "was getting broke in all motor in another car" might be worth looking into

I use the MLS and I run 19lbs all day long...

What did you torque the studs to?
headgaskets blow from two reasons - lifting the head off, and knock. if you're knocking enough, no amount of torque on the headgasket will save it, nor will whichever badass gasket you're running. Just something to think about...

I beleve the head is torqued to 80ft/lb. I dont think I am getting knock. It is hard to tell with the external wastegate. The motor still runs great it is it just pushes coolent out the overflow. Maybe with the warmer temperatures I need to run a colder thermosthat? What else would cause the coolent to get pushed out the over flow? I changed the rad cap. The engine temp is steady where it always is.

If it's really blown into a waterjacket, you'll see it not only blow coolant out the overflow, but it will start to overheat. If it starts overheating, then i'd worry. You could simply be pushing coolant out becaue hot things expand, and summer is slowly creaping up on us -0 this last week and a half has been the highest temp I've seen so far this year. Just food for thought, again.
I torqued mine to 100ft/lbs. Why not?

Well what do you mean by pushing coolant out the overflow? How much is comming out and when in relation to run time and temp?

After driving on the highway, when I stop and the car shuts off after a min or so it will have a puddle of coolent on the floor. Also I is as if the coolent in the bottle is either boiling or air(exhaust from the engine is being pushed out. I am going to do a leak down test to see.

not saying yours is blown but that is exactly what mine use to do.

mine did that too..... hot as hell at idle... coolent just poors out of the overflow... but do this.. get a glass jar and put some water in it.. the start the car and put your overflow hose in the jar.. if u see bubbles... its your head gasket... if its just pushing out coolent w/ no bubbles.... then dubble check your cooling system 1st

So who can I have o-ring the head? I am tired of the gasket going I want it bullet proof.

when you torque your factory head bolts to yield that actual pound measurement is in excess of 90lbs...just food for thought.
Bulletproof....there is no such thing when you have damaging issues. Like it has been stated, if you have detonation there is no gasket that will save you or an o-ring. you need to find out exactly why the hg blew and if it blew. if you head is lifting due to high boost then tell me how an o-ringed block will save you? time to do some homework and quit pointing fingers at your car.

Well, I dont think I have detionation I beleve I would hear it. Plus if it was detionating long enough to kill 2 head gaskets I beleve I would have seen signs on either the pistons or head.

You will not hear all detonation..only real bad detonation. I never said you killed 2 HG's with detonation??????????? No idea where you are getting that, i am just saying you need to find out why the HG failed rather than dump a ton of money into a motor to find out you didnt fix your problem. Do what you want to do, its your money.

Wow, some one has an attitude... If your gona be an ass about shit keep your posts to your self. Obviously there is something causing it to blow. It dosent take a rocket scientist.

and to answer your question... yes u can ring the head... but you'll have to buy a copper gasket and machine the head as well as the block.. if u go this route then tell the guy at the machine shope u want a figure 8 ring set... that will def never blow!!!*LOL* jake

no i dont have an attitude i just find it insulting when you tell me i am saying something i am not. My point was clear that you need to find out why it blew before you dump a ton of money.

Here si something to look into when you get it apart....did you ever have it magnafluxed for cracks? Remeber not all cracks can be seen by the naked eye.

Enough bickering, stop.
Did you use the same torque wrench all times doing your head gasket? It could be out of spec and giving you bad torque on the studs.
You can o-ring the head and get a receiver groove put into the block, but the MLS gasket really won't crush into it, it's a bit too rigid. O-Rings really are meant for composit gaskets, or copper ones.
