74280, SRT-4 motor in 2gnt Posted by lrseclipse, May-08-04 07:25 PM
i have a 95 and want to turbo the 420a but i lightbulbed the idea of swapping in a srt-4 motor instead of doing a hahn kit. anyone know anything about the SRT-4's? i think they're 420's but not sure, if so, what is different about them? thanks -Lauren

74281, RE: SRT-4 motor in 2gnt Posted by Steve, May-08-04 07:39 PM
Oh boy...They are 420a's but they arent the 420a we have. We have a 2.0 liter 420a while they have a 2.4 liter 420a. few have swapped in 2.4 liter 420a's but its a rather custom job. Someone else is gunna say something more than likely but Im just a nice guy

SEARCH !!!!!!! its not just something that goes along with "& Rescue"!
actually you should do the 4g63 swap. MUCH easier and far motor HP! Summitracing.com has custom adapater kits. 6-8hr max job time. Do that, it'll be fun!

im doing a 2.4L, pm me and i'll enlighten you as to what has to be done
but to answer the question at hand...
no, you cant put a srt-4 motor in a 2gnt. _________ 96 talon esi-t san clemente, ca

Guys, can the search talk. No need to gum up a thread over and over again with the same crap.
As for the SRT-4 engine swap, if you did the whole engine you'll need all the electronics as well. The biggest problem with just using the block that I know of is the crank trigger. They are significantly different from the 2.0L crank trigger. Also, since the SRT-4 uses the new T850 vs the T350 driveline you might run into problems there.
What most people seem to be doing is to get a 1st gen 2.4L block (95-99) and putting in SRT-4 internals. Then putting the 2gNT head on it. SRT-4 internals are dirt cheap which makes them very alluring comparted to getting all forged pieces.

1st gen 2.4L block :wary. what do you mean? the 2.4L block came out in 94 for the caravans and is still used in 2001 model pt NT's and even in the powertech cherokee's in 02
the blocks you would need to find in order to do this swap would be any of the 2.4L blocks out of the cloud cars. mine is from a 98 stratus for example. also, dodge caravan, avenger/sebring, pt cruiser non-turbo all have the same 2.4L block.
the 2gnt head bolts right up to this block, which makes making a 420a into a 2.4L very do-able. of course, certain other modifications must be made including custom oil pan...side motor mount, etc

looks roughly the same of course the intake and exhuast are switched. But yeah swapping another engine in is asking for a lotting fabrication and work. Why do you think we don't swap 4g63s.

its actually not to much fabrication, and if all goes to plan we'll have a swap kit out soon. theres a lot more reasons not to swap a 4g63 than there is to swap a 2.4L block (not the srt-4 mind you) the 2.4L swap is way easier than the 4g63 swap anyway

He's picked up some of my off-board terminology. I like to call the 94+ 2.4L NA blocks tyhat came in everythiong a "1g" 2.4L block, as they are all essentially the same. The SRT4 / PT turbo block would be a "2g" 2.4L block, as it's a newer design and revised over the "old" 2.4L motor.
So quit being a smartass fuckstick.

ok, now i know what you're talking about. im like...uhhh...1st gen 2.4? there are the NA blocks, and then there are the turbo 2.4L blocks. we can use the NA block only for a swap, thats all i was saying ;)

you were so close too...
the Avenger/Sebring Cupe never came w/ a 2.4L, just the same 2.0 as the 2gNT and the 6g73 2.5L V6.
The 2.4L was available in the 95-00 sebring convt, but the convert' has nothing in common in with the 95-00 sebring coupe, as it is just a cloud car w/ 2 less doors and the roof cut off.

i did some researching and joined srtforums.com the engine is a 2.4L A855 motor, basically a beefd up, turbo PT cruiser motor... the swap'll be done in August. we've found several wrecked srt-4's we can pull the motor, mounts, ecu, tranny, and exhaust from. WOOT!

hope you have a welder and a fuck load of time on your hands but nonetheless, good luck
...there is a more practical way to swap a 2.4L block into a 2gnt ya know...
sorry, yea i know the sebring and avenger didnt come with the 2.4...sorry, brain fart. thinking of the stratus/cirrus and breeze, they look a lot the same _________ 96 talon esi-t san clemente, ca

Good luck man. I don't think that driveline will phgysically fit in a 2gnt engine bay - Neon engine bays are actually several inches wider than ours, and i believe the SRT's is wider still.
All i can say, take pictures, keep us updated. I'm interested, since you're actually willing to try, to see if it is possible.

Not to mention you will have to send out your tranny to driveshaftshop, or give them the exact measurments of the length of the custom axles you will need to order from them as they've never built ones for a srt-4 tranny in a 2gnt yet. As well as some custom fabrication to the frame to get the tranny to fit.

lauren i think you under estimate the amount of work that a srt4 engine swap will take. you need to buy a forn clip custom weld your own motor mounts, custom weld your own tranny mounts, have a custom made axle, find a way to compltely re-wire the 2gnt to accept the signals from the foreign engine. your taking technology designed in 2000 and putting it in a car designed back in 1993. were not just talking a few weeks of downtime here but a few months atleast
basically as i said somewhere before it would probably be easier to swap a 4g63 in if you buy a wrecked 2g gst front clip at a junkyard.
OR you can do the right thing, sell it and buy a turbo. you could buy a red 2g gst and transfer the body parts over and sell the gs for $3k, and i know of a red gst forsale for $4000 so basically your paying $1000 for a engine swap and turbo. i dont know many 2g rs/gs turbo's that can last over 20k miles let alone over 150k miles like ambers talon. anyways i think for a highschool student with 0 time to work on a car selling the gs and buying a gst would be a better choice
i know the dedicated folks here will tell you a built turbo 420a is a sight to behold but realistically for a highschool student with a basically full time job you really cant afford the down time and dedication it would take to put up with the bullshit hahn fuel system and all the tuning and time under the car it would take. back when i had my rs i weighed my options. i could spend all my money and buy a turbo kit or i could go all show. looking back if i had bought a turbo kit i would have ruined my financial assetts putting up with a blown engine (and it seriously would have, i had massive leaking problems)

Its gonna cost you in the neihborhood of 'a few g's' just for those axles. Trust me, I already asked...like over a year ago. My stage 5 axles run around 2k alone. Just look for a stratus block or a PT block. I got a spare one I could sell to you.

how many other people got the turVo to work??? we pulled 6 lbs at 16 volts... Do u think it would cost more to build the 2.4 L PT motor instead of just buying a salvaged srt-4 motor????
|
74453, RE: SRT-4 motor in 2gnt Posted by Kirby, May-13-04 02:18 PM
It would cost less to get the salvaged motor more than likely, but that's not the problem. The problem is trying to put that engine into a 2gnt. That's where the money starts adding up. It may cost less to get the part, but it costs an assload more to get it wedged in the car.

the real huge cost will be to have a complete custom turbo system squezed in the limited space between the engine and the firewall
while a built 2.4 fitted with a 420a head doesn't have this problem

74471, RE: SRT-4 motor in 2gnt Posted by lrseclipse, May-13-04 05:50 PM
so if the custom turbo system has to be squeezed in , y would the 2.4L A855 be any different? anyone have an srt-4 so u can measure your bay for me :)????

|
74473, RE: SRT-4 motor in 2gnt Posted by alain95i4, May-13-04 06:29 PM
the few of us going 2.4 are doing hybrid engines , keeping a 2.4 short block but fitted with a 2gnt 420a head, the result is an engine like the 420a but taller , and we have all the space in the front like before for the turbo kit
you want to fit a srt-4 style engine in your car with or without the stock srt-4 turbo/manifold combo you will have exhaust in the back and intake in the front check under your hood with the 420a and look at the space available between the engine and the firewall also our cars don't have a big notch in the firewall for exhaust routing unlike the chrysler cars and minivans
Available space is a big issue here Mitsubishi and Chrysler had to invent a reversed neon head to fit the 2.0 in the 2gnt engine bay , would they have a better choice cost wise I'm pretty sure they would have stick with the already existing engine of the Neon DOHC
anyway my 2 cents
Alain

74477, RE: SRT-4 motor in 2gnt Posted by lrseclipse, May-13-04 07:13 PM
thanks Chris that'd be great... as for exhaust, like i said, im getting the motor and exhaust from the salvaged srt. so i think most of this is just a space issue, "Will it fit?" we will know when uber fantastic Chris can get us some measurements, then the rest is just wiring in an Ecu, motor mounts, Etc etc etc
|
74478, RE: SRT-4 motor in 2gnt Posted by Uberingram, May-13-04 07:23 PM
I'll let you know right now that the exhuast idea is not going to work. You'll be fabbing that too.
|
74492, RE: SRT-4 motor in 2gnt Posted by Corbin, May-14-04 06:30 AM
I think you should just get the whole front clip from the Neon SRT-4 and weld-it right onto the Eclipse. That takes care of everything in one easy step. You could have the first Nelipse. Then you could twin-TurVo it.
I think you're really barking up the wrong tree with swapping the SRT-4 engine into the 2GNT. I think you'll get overwhelmed with all the details. It sounds cool on paper, but the details can kill you. It seems especially silly since people are building 2.4l hybrids that eliminate 80% of the details that you'll have to deal with. Where there's a will, there's a way...but will it be worth it?

74501, RE: SRT-4 motor in 2gnt Posted by Avenger, May-14-04 07:58 AM
You are all seriously underestimating this whole SRT-4 business. Aside from the physical standpoint of getting things to fit and line up there is a whole slew of things none of you have brought up. Let's start listing ...
Shifter cables & shifter - You're kidding yourself if you think either the 2gnt or the SRT-4 cables will work ... probably some sort of hybrid
Throttle linkage - Hmmm ... TB in the front ... throttle cable only for a firewall side TB
Water lines - Lines to the heater core, radiator. Not in the same place
AC Lines - Hopefuly the condenser will be in the same place
Clutch Type - Is the SRT4 cable clutch operated or hydraulic? If it isn't hydraulic ...
Hood probably won't fit/close, oil pan will probably interfere with the center crossmember.
Every electronic thing on the inside of the car (tach, speedo, AC controls, gauge lights, gauge cluster) - There is just one big gigantic harness that goes from inside the car to the engine bay. You'll have to cut and splice almost EVERYTHING.
This is just if you want to have some of the nice-ties of a daily driver. I mean seriously we don't share most of the sensors on the SRT-4. These two cars are so different they might as well be made by different manufacturers. You can take bits and peices from one to the other but trying to swap the whole motor ... If you want the SRT-4 block then just take the block and make it work. Trying to put the block/head/manifolds/engine management to work for you isn't going to be pretty.
If you're gonna turn this car into full race then just strip everything out, drop in an older 2.4L and then go full standalone.
