7420, AHHHH!!! Dat was a BI&* ch!!(timing belt) Posted by XtremeRS, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Well, thats all i can say! I didn't expect replacing the timing belt to be such a bitch!! I don't think the mitsu engineers and the chrysler engineers got together when they decided to put that motor into the clipse!! There is NO room to do nuttin! I was wondering if anyone would like me to make a how-to on doing this, since the FAQ timing belt thing sucks, and doesnt really tell much on how to do this with the motor in the car. There were severl big problems i ran into, so anyone really interested, let me know and i will make a how-to on it! Oh yeah, i started working on it at 1 pm, and worked straight through till almost 9:45. I replaced: timing belt, alternator, tensioner pulley, timing belt idler pulley, acc belt idler pulley, and new AFX underdrive pulley, and drive belts. I also had the use of a car lift, and air tools, and it still was time consuming. @ 58000 miles, the timing belt that was on there,i believe was original, had a faint chrysler symbol on it so not sure, but it was in very good condition, looked like it had many more thousand miles it could go. There were no leaks from any oil seals nor water pump, so i decided to let these go for now(hopefully will not bite me in the ass later) Well anyone want a how-to???

Yeah man, if you could make a how-to it would be nice. Im only at 41,000 miles, but it would be great to know what I will need when the time comes

Yeah, I would like to see a how-to as well. I was gathering parts to do the 60K service this week.

I know we have to change the timing belt, but what else needs to be done @ 60k miles????

Water pump, idler pulley, timing belt tensioner, flush coolant, etc.. 60,000 miles maintenance calls for several things besides the timing belt.
A write up, with pictures if you took any, would be most excellent. We can add it to the main page and i'm sure many people would find it helpful to have!

There is no room in any car tjhat the 420A is installed in, Neon as just a s little room top work with. I'll love to see a write up since I'll be doing a head swap in the future and will have to doo all the timing belt removal... ugh... not looking forward to it.

Is a new water pump and idler pulley necessary? I only changed the timing belt and tensioner pulley...that's it...we don't have a balance belt do we?

7429, RE: AHHHH!!! Dat was a BI&* ch!!(timing belt) Posted by DarkOne, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Nope, no balance belt.
Scheduled maintenance on the water pump is 60,000 per the owners manual. I've heard horror stories about waterpumps locking up and shredding belts, etc.. but the fact is if it goes, you've got to take all the same things apart as you did when you did your timing belt. If you're doing the belt, it's maybe another 15 minutes of work to put in the water pump. Why risk it?

Damnn I did my timing belt at 47k miles, but didn't do the water pump. So has anyone's water pumps lasted to about 100k miles? Since that's probably when I would do a timing belt maintenance again...Actually, at this rate, by the time I hit 100k miles my car will be nearly ten years old. By then, it will only be worth 2-5k like the 1g's are worth now...

I think its worth $300 to have a shop do it. And if you have a shop do it have them throw on the AFX underdrive pulley too.

I actually ended up doing mine by myself a couple weeks ago. I just replaced the belt tho, i didnt bother with the cam seals since i've got another head sitting in my room which i may end up selling, might be buying rays. the Afx pulley wasnt that hard to get off to redo the belt. gettign that cam gear cover off was a bix tho.

Yeah guys, i typed out a install how-to and sent it to the admin. Hopefully they will get it up here soon! Oh yeah, it would have cost me 400 bucks at satan to do my belt, and that does NOT include things like pulleys or whatever. I figure all i replaced would have cost me around at least a grand. But i only suggest people do this if they are somewhat mechanically inclined, and are good with tools. Check out my post, when its up, and you will see the probs i ran into(yep one of em is that fu%kin timing belt cover!). later!
