I suppose this could fall under the audio catagory also but i thought it would fit better here. Anyway here goes...

So i just had my AF/X UDP installed yesterday and now im having problems. When i sit at idle and have lets say... my AC and headlights on, my low voltage light comes on. it goes off after i give it a little throttle or if i were to turn one of those things off.

anyway the problem is that i have a JL 500/1 and 4 10" JL W0's which need a little bit of power to run also. We are making a custom enclosure so they are sitting in my room right now but im pretty sure that my car isnt going to like to push that amp when i cant even run my basic accessories!

my question is this: if i got a high output alternator or a optima yellow top battery would it solve this problem? i cant find anyone who really agrees. Any ideas would be great

Well the lights dimming seems to be a fact of life with the afx. If you run a cap for your amps it should reduce the drain they will put on your charging system. A high output alternator would be better, however you have to figure it will underdrive that by 30% as well. As for your low voltage light comming on, do you mean the dummy light in the dash??? If that is comming on you may need to check the charging system, because mine has never done that because of the UDP. How old is your batt?

Yes, the dummy light in the dash comes on when im running those two accessories. When i turn one off however the light turns off (this happens only at idle, and i as i may have said already when i give it a little gas the light turns off also.)

the battery is 1 or 2 years old, but im pretty sure its fine.

a question though: when the pulley underdrives the alternator by 30% does that mean that it produces 30% less amps? or does it mean something else?

anyway im pretty sure that im pulling too hard on the alternator but i wasnt sure if a bigger one would help. The stock one is 75 or 90 amps and i looked at some ones fron Stinger today that make about 150 amps which should be more than enough even at 30% underdrive.

Your Battery indicator light will illuminate when the voltage drops below a certain level. Most likely because of the under drive in combination with heavy drain from audio system components. It could also be a sign that your voltage regulator is failing in your alternator as well and that a new one could possibly solve the problem. Not guranteed though, but if you do replace it, look for a high output model.

you gotta remember, even if you get a high output 150amp alt, it IS gonna take more power to turn it

yeah man i have the same problem. when i run the assesories my idiot light comes on. but now i have a volt meter that stays at 14v on acceleration and drops down to 12v at idle. but when the AC,blower etc. is on, it drops to like 11 to 10. i believe when the voltage drops below 12v then the idiot light comes on, cause your susposed to be between 12 and 14 volts. anyway i was planning on getting a optima battery and high output alternator just to be safe when i go turbo next year.

ok yea this kind of scares me lol, i am going to install the udp tomorrow, now at night i will drive wit headlights on (but prolly not the a/c cuz it hasnt gotten humid here lately) but i kno over the summer it will n at night ac + headlighs = may cause problem, is there any solution to this? I only have upgraded speakers so i dont have any audio prob's there, i have a new alternator n new battery as of 2-3 months ago. Anyone else have this problem or jsut the select few with systems?

I just had the AF/X UDP installed and I have an Audiobahn A2300HCX (2400 watts at 1 ohm bridged), which is a class A/B amp, and other than my headlights dimming some I don't have any problems. I never had that light come on once yet.. I have a volt meter and a upgraded 180amp battery (forget which brand, similar to an optima).

yeah ok i belive that one. Thats a 90 amp alternator theres no way it could support that kinda of drive i know. Ive caught 2 mtx81000 class d amps on fire. Simply becuase it took 175 amps to drive it. An amp like that audiobahn would burn quick. As for the highoutput altnernator. I had mine installed for about a year now with no problems. Its 200 amps alt at 3k rpms. I bought it from lazartronics.com I paid 300 for it and that was the most amps for buck that i could fine. I also have udp.

IMO, you need to consider which you would rather have perform at it's peak. Engine or ICE. I'd say engine. Ditch 2 subs, lose the weight they bring to the table, and maybe install a cap on the system to hold some juice when the big notes hit.

Maybe see if you can't find someplace to get an overdrive pulley for your alternator to speed it back up?

I have never had a problem with it.. granted I don't usually have it turned up the whole way when im just sittin at idle. Oh and I am only using one of my 15's for now until I get the other box done so I am probabally not hitting full power just yet.

installed it, no probs jus the lil b***** (stock pulley) was hard to get off, no probs so far n i love the added accerleration hehe

If anyone out there can get me a cad print of the alt and power steering pulley i can have some lighter billet pulleys made For cheap. I want to do it but i dont know nothing about cad.
