74003, Autometer EGT gauge probe hole the same size as a Greddy EGT probe hole?

On my previous post about this topic, the egt probe doesn't fit?

So can I just weld the old egt autometer bung, and install the egt probe in another runner?

Wow, it's a good thing you participated in this thread.

I'm goign to say it doesn't matter though, because each runner should be running the same temperature.

not necessarily true

general rule of thumb is to put it in the port that gets the least amount of fuel at the end of the rail. this port would run the leanest and would yield higher egts. the 8 inj setup would kind of negate that in theory.

The Autometer EGT fitting diameter and pitch is identical to the GReddy EGT fitting diameter and pitch. At least mine was.

Unfortunately, the GReddy probe will not fit in the Autometer fitting. That would definately be too good to be true.

The only problem I had while performing this upgrade was that the crappy Autometer EGT probe fitting somehow MELTED on the inside of the manifold, creating this little mushroom that prevented me from removing the fitting completely. How did i get around this? I can't remember... I think i just hacked away at it for a while with a Dremel.

ARGH!!!

So how did you deal with the old bung? Did you widen the autometer bung to fit the greddy probe, or did you remove the whole thing? DId you remove the whole bung (which I am totally not looking forward of doing) and replaced it with the greddy bung?

I had to remove all of the Autometer crap from my exhuast manifold to get the new equipment to fit properly.

If I remember correctly, the Autometer and the GReddy design for how it crimps the probe into the fitting is slightly different. I think the GReddy holds the probe using a method kind of like a compression fitting, where as the Autometer probe has a ridge on it and it just kind of sits in the Autometer fitting.

Yes it will fit. You may have to drill out the inside of the fitting to get the probe in there, but its a 10 second job. The threads all match up.

The VDO bung is different, but I was able to just strip off the threads with an impact wrench and re-cut them with the appropriate die.

I found that buying a $20 tap&die set was cheaper than buying 30 $4 fittings from home depot and performance shops that invariably didn't work when I got them home.
