73774, How do I "upgrade" to a better alternator? Posted by GhEttOrAiD, Apr-29-04 04:34 PM
I dont know if this will solve my problems, but basically I just installed a second Derale fan, switched so I can turn it on instead of my heater (90 degree summer weather with the heater on is killer, specially for a fat kid)
Works perfectly, not too noisy.
Anyhoo, my voltage CAN dip to like 12.5-12.4, down from 13-13.5-14 range. Also notice voltmeter dipping when I have blinker on, or power up any other accessories. Also have sub/amp drawing power. I do have a 30% AFX UDP.. but this problem was present before it was installed.
My question is... Can I get a more powerful alternator, and if so, what part number/model number/specs/etc? Also, could it aggravate any belt carnage? I would rather have electrical demons than to start throwing belts again...

1) get your battery checked out first. im sure you would rather fix the problem for $50 bucks than 200+.
2) do a search for "alternator installation" or somthing like that. ive done a couple writeups before, and peopel have ammended it to include every posible permutation of difficulty when swapping one. that will give you an idea of what to expect. ive never heard of anyone having belt probs. w/ and aftermarket alternator.
3) if you decide you want to swap, check out www.4alterstart.com .they sell 140 amp alts. there for about $225 (i think). i installe done in the eclipse and was very pleased in every aspect. you can get higher amp units, but they will cost you at least 2x that.
edit: LOL, turbo beat me to the link. i shoudl get commision from that site, i was the first one here to buy thier product, and since at least 3-4 more people have bought them!

yeah the battery was replaced last week (warranty) because it was leaking acid, also got rid of my "charging system" fault
