Hey guys
I hooked up my new speed sensor, all the wires are correct and everything should be working fine.
But I still get my check engine light on and the speedo isn't moving.

Anyone have any ideas on this?
I took it to Chrysler and they told me it was hooked up right, might be something else wrong.

I'm wondering if the sensor itself is defective?

Thanks guys

Could be the speedometer ring gear on the diff itself. make sure its still on the diff securely.

ok, I'll check that when I go back in.

I've changed the sensor over to the new style, with the old one, the speedo would move sometimes to 20km/h and then 0. Now I'm just getting a check engine light on.

yeah reach your finger in the spedo hole and make sure the plastic gear is not damaged, also check the wireing diagram....one of the wires at the sensor plug should have 12+ constant when the key is turned on....if not there is a problem in the harness. Another thing is the sensor gear....make sure it didnt fall off. Did you clear the ECU with a scanner when the sensor was replaced? The next this is that the ECU can be not sending the ground pulse to the sensor.....the is a stretch but it has happened to me. more likely the ECU will intermittantly stop sending signals to other sensors too so i doubt its that.

Good luck

I'm going to go work on it in a few mins.
But I didn't clear the ECU, the car had no battery in it for 6 months though...I don't know if no power to the ECU for that long would clear it though???

Thanks for your help.

Well, I just tested the wires in the car.
I used a test light with the car running, 2 of the wires the car didn't do anything, but the one wire, solid color I think red or orange, and the car shut off.

Now I've also heard that there is a fuse for the speed sensor but I don't know where it is.

So far I'm just about ready to give up on this car and sell it.

Really, 3 years ago when I picked it up, the engine blew 30 mins after.
It's honestly been a pain in the ass since day 1.
I bought a 2003 Civic last year for my everyday/winter car...maybe it's time to just have the one car.

ok the red or orange wire is the 12+ constant.....no idea why the car dies but i always test for constant withthe key on....not running. the other two are ecu wires. There isnt a fuse that i am aware of for the speedo sensor....even the wiring diagrams do not show one. that pos wire gets power from the relay on top by your clutch resevoir..its the relay on the left, the right is the fuel pump relay. That means you have good voltage to the sensor. did you feel up the speedo gear in the tranny?

You will need to reset the ECU via a scanner, disconnecting the power will not effectively reset the ECU.

Everyone i have encountered on makes from domestic to my own 96esi...when the speed sensor failed and produced a code...the ecu had to be cleared.

I own my own scanner...the code was right there in front of my eyes.

I've never had to reset mine either, VSS code or not. If it gets signal, it gets signal and the speedo works.

Unplugging the power to the ECU will reset it. Our ECUs do not have any sort of backup power supply like some others do.

I haven't taken the sensor back out...right now I'm driving my other car and have the Talon parked inside.

All I did on Sunday was check the wires, once I couldn't get the light to come on, I gave up.

I'm going to cut the wires again, and rewire the sensor, see what happends then.

Thanks guys

ok guys

I just cut the wires and rewired it the way the Chrysler dealer told me to.
I took the sensor out of the tranny and checked the gear inside.
I can feel it, it turns upwards and downwards. Judging by the way the sensors gear is angeled, I'm guessing that's right?

I put the sensor back in, checked all the wires and took the car for a 2-3 min drive. The speedo never moved and the check engine light never came on.

Now someone on here mentioned the relay. I'm wondering if that needs to be replaed?
They also said it was the left...I'm wondering if it's the left as in left when your looking at it, or left as in drivers side (right when you look at it).

Thanks alot guys.

No no dont replace the relay.....its 50.00 and if it takes a crap your car wont run! It feeds power to all sensors.

Dino a question for you then.....when my o2 took a crap....10 mins after i bought the car. I replaced it....battery was disconnected because i changed the clutch at the same time. Started the car up just to see if the light would go away.....it was still there and when i hooked up my scanner it was the same code.....reset the ECU via the scanner and it was fine. Why?

oh and just for reference....the relay that powers up all engine acc (mostly anyway) is the relay on the left if you are standing in front of the car looking at the engine. the one on the right is the Fuel pump relay. last time i bought either it was 54.00 for the ASD (Auto shut down relay) relay and 35.00 for the fuel pump relay. I have two spares of each now....i hunted them down at the bone yard after paying out that money.

well, if it's not the relay, then what else could it be??
I think I'm going to take the sensor back and see if they can get a older one, or at least try and replace it with another one.

I just got mine today, but no gear. sucks imo. how hard is the rewire on the plug? is the colors the same? the gear should be in by friday I hope.

wire colors may vary....just make sure each wire is the same location on each plug. far rear wire goes to the far rear wire on the new plug...get it?

if its not the sensor...we are guessing really it has happened before where the sensor was defective....it could be a short in the wires going to the ECU or the ECU. Next step is to identify the speedo wire in the ECU harnes plug. Disconnect the ECU, disconnect the speed sensor. Using an ohm meter ohm out the two ECU wires from sensor to ECU. this will tell you if either is broken somewhere in the harness. if thats good, with both plugs still disconnected, ohm out the speedo wire at the ECU or the speedo sensor to ground.....you should get no connectivity, this means the wire is not grounded or shorted. I will double check the wiring diagrams but the ECU wires dont connect to anything but the ECU to my knowledge. If this is all good......try another sensor or borrow an ECU and try it. There is a slight possibility the gauge cluster is going bad i guess. Does the car try to die when you pushin the clutch. I know you are getting a trouble code but i wonder if the gauge cluster can go bad and make the ecu think the sensor is shot? no idea on that one so dont go buyin anything.

check your wires for shorts with a meter you canbuy a cheap one at radio shack if you dont have one. I will verify the harness diagrams tonight for ya. if all is good try another sensor, borrow an ECU. Did you fell up the speedo gear inside the trans on the Diff? What about the gear on the sensor?

Hey, ya the car does try to die when I push the clutch in.

I don't think it's the cluster because it still worked a bit (20 kms) when I would accelerate. But when I changed it to the new sensor it stopped working all together and then the CEL came on.

I also checked the gear, it's there and doesn't feel stripped or anything.

Would there be anyways to tell if the 2 gears are making contact? or if they are stripped?

Thanks for your help

Because the ECU stores the codes for a set amount of time. it takes two "trips"** after the problem is solved before it will command the CEL off, and then several key-ons before it will erase the code itself. Just because the code is there, or the CEL is on, doesn't mean the sensor you replaced is not working, it just means it hasn't been working long enough for the ECU to command the cel off.

**A "trip" is defined in the Technical Information Manual as running time for the car the meets certain criteria of distance, temperature, and engine speed for a certain amount of time. Basically, think of it as two 15 minute drives.

ok, i just replaced mine, and i got nothing at all. it still doesnt read. i hooked everything up right, black to black, a orange wire to a yellow wire, and a orange wire w/white stripe to yellow wire w/white stripe. connected everything back together and nothing. what the hell could it be????? No CEL either. :shrug

I called satan and they said that the gear inside the transmission is either stripped or missing, so they have to take out the tranny, take it apart, fix the problem, put it back together, put it back in and its done. Total cost, $1,000 bucks!!!!! FUCK THAT!!!!!! I will drive the sob without a speed sensor. thats bull, the car isnt worth that.
73413, RE: Speed sensor

Do it yourself. it's not really all that hard. it's like doing a clutch job, with a few extra steps.

I would, but to be honest, i think that the guy that helped me the last time has really and truely cause the problems that I am having now. I tried to find out from a junkyard how much a used tranny was and they said that it would be about the same ammount at getting mine fixed, i am just going to drive the car not knowing how fast I am going. Fuck it!

Thats crap for a dealer to say that right off the bat....How do you know there isnt a bad wire in the harness causing the problem...what if the wire on the pin in the harness conn corroded and broek...you spend 1000.00 so they say to replace a plastic gear that cost 40.00 to find out thats not the problem......typical dealer threat trying to rape you.

you put a new harness in? From the ECU to the entire engine? Why? I dont wanna know how much that cost at a dealer.

Hey guys
ok, so tonight I got my new speed sensor, looks like the other one they sold me was defective.

But this one is doing the same thing as the original one...goes to 20kms and that's it, won't go higher. It will drop to 0 then 20 then sit there, then 0, sit there...etc.

Anyone have any ideas? maybe one of the gears?

Thanks guys.

I would have to go with dino on this and suspect the gear inside the trans is badly worn. You know its reading just no accuratly liek a few teeth are missing maybe.

Does anyone know which wires on the speed sensor send signal to the speedometer on the dash? i'm trying to hook up my digital speedometer but need to know which wire is the signal input/output so i can get a reading. on the new digital speedometer from nordklog performance. or which wire on the ECU is for the speedometer sensor that does the speedo reading.

got a 99 Mitsubishi GS
