72978, So what's considered a rough idle?

My car's idle goes up and down from 900-700 or so. Would this be considered a rough idle? It jumps up and down to the tune of my A/F gauge as it reads rich and lean.

I don't know if that's really a bad idle or just the IAC hunting for idle speed. :shrug Along these lines I was wondering yesterday just how normal it is for the car to stumble momentarily at idle from time to time. You know, when you're sitting waiting to make a turn and you feel the engine just twitch for a split second and then keep idling normally. Go figure. Same idea from different points of view today sir. :thumbsup Great minds think alike. Now I need to go home and take a goofy pic of myself in the bathroom mirror or something. LOL

And/Or if your rearview mirror has ever broken off the glass from the vibration like mine did. :whoa

Once my car is warmed out, sometimes the idle drops to 500 rpm. I am upgrading my coil pack and wires so I am wondering if that will fix that problem.

I've read on here that at 500 rpm is within reason of the car's idle so :shrug.

lol I hate you so much.

But yeah same here. I'll be stopped at a stoplight for a while and all of a sudden the car will dip to around 600-700 rpms every now and then. I have a 3" thermal so the entire car vibrates when it happens.

Basically, a rough idle is an idle that

A. that is so bad your car stops idling and stalls

and B. one you can't tolerate :)

You might just have a messed up IAC, but the jumping around a bit happens (well, the safc tuing might be doing something too :) ) so I don't think you have to worry. If you get a CEL with the code "idle target not reached" then you know you have to look at the IAC. But, remember, the factory specs are "idle at 800 rpms plus or minus 100 rpms" so I think you're fine.
