Does anyone know a good way to pop the drivers side axle out of the manual tranny. Dave41079 and I tried for about 2-3 hrs last weekend with all different types of tools trying to pop it out. I got the pass side out fairly easy but the dr side is being a bitch. Is there a special tool that i can use to get this thing out. I tried searching but turned up nothing and I need to put in my new clutch so i can have a car to drive. Also if i can't get it out is it possible to drop the tranny to change the clutch with the drivers side axle still in? Please help. Thanks in advance.

yea the drivers can be a b****h. What i did was put a prybar on it and tap the cv at the trans with a mallet. (this is done while laying on your side under the car swinging the mallet up into the axle cv.) It will come out but no need to pound hard on it. The difficulty is getting a good prying point since the trans does not have a good spot to use as a fulcrum for the prybar. It will come out just dont give up and keep at it.

Use the prybar/hook that came with your jack. Support the axle so its not hanging down on the seal. While prying, tap the green part upwards with a mallet.

i dont have the foggiest idea why it could be so hard :shrug, ive never once had a problem getting them out. getting them back in can be a biznatch sometimes though. its all about a pry bar and some finesse

Anthony and Dave think that the splines may have twisted a little together.

Definately try that upwards tapping while prying anothony.

They can be a bitch sometimes.

I've found the easiest way to do it is to wedge a large screwdriver between the inner CV housing and the case, hold it in place with your hand until you can get your foot on it, then kick the motherfucker as hard as you can. Dig the screwdriver out of the garage wall, and the axle should be hanging by a thread.

Yeah I've had my axles out a few times and never had this much trouble. A friend of mine ended up hacing to break his axle to get his out, because the splines had slightly twisted together from hard launches. We'll try popping it out a couple more times, but I don't want to waste all day on it. If we can't get it out in about a half hour, then we're going to take off the axle nut and take the axle out of the hub, then drop the drivers axle and the tranny all as one unit. We're just changing the clutch, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Oh, I was assuming you'd already taken the axle out of the hub. It certainly makes things easier.

Those were the worst part of the rebuild imo and one of the reasons why I would always recommend leaving the tranny in the car and just pulling the engine by itself come rebuild time. Of course, now I need to replace both CVs so I'm doubly own3d. :(

just get 2 new axles and call it a day

when i did my clutch i didnt pull the axles out of the hub, just the trans....worked way better and was WAY faster putting it back together

worse comes to worse, pull the engine instead.

I had the same problem on my driver's side axle. I put a jack underneath the rotor and took the tension off the the axle....raise the hub until the axle is fairly straight.

And it is a little harder to remove, but that should help tremendously.

i had one hell of a time getting my driver's side out too, but I found that it was a lot easier once I stopped trying to pry it out. It seemed like it came right out when I "popped it out" with a quick, sudden pop of the pry-bar instead.
